PM Golding to Address Opening Session of CARICOM Meeting in Antigua & Barbuda (Jamaica Information Service, 06/27/08)

Prime Minister Bruce Golding will address the opening session of the 29th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to be held from July 1-4, in Antigua and Barbuda.

 

DR President to PETROCARIBE Summit (Prensa Latina, 06/27/08)

Attendance of the Dominican Republic president Leonel Fernandez at the extraordinary Summit on the PETROCARIBE agreement on the 13th of next month was confirmed by the Venezuelan ambassador here, Belisario Landis. The meeting was called by the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, in face of the uncontrolled increases of oil prices that has many poor countries on the verge of a crisis.

Canciller Maduro se reunió con empresarios colombianos (El Universal, Venezuela, 06/26/08)

El canciller Nicolás Maduro se reunió hoy con un grupo de empresarios colombianos, en un encuentro previo a la cita que deben sostener los presidentes Hugo Chávez y Alvaro Uribe antes del  próximo 15 de julio, indicó la agencia oficial de noticias ABN. Maduro se reunió el jueves con 46 empresarios colombianos que tienen  inversiones en Venezuela, con los cuales revisó "cómo crear mecanismos para  articular el desarrollo económico", refirió la agencia.

 

St Vincent tourism minister wants more investment in regional airlines (Jamaica Observer, 06/27/08)

St Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Minister has called on Caribbean governments to invest in the region's carriers instead of subsidising international airlines. Glen Beache, speaking over the weekend at a town hall forum of the Caribbean Tourism Development Company at the International Trade Centre, contended that home drums beat first and that LIAT, Air Jamaica and Caribbean Airlines be given more attention.

 

Grenada's tourism board targets Jamaican travellers (Jamaica Observer, 06/27/08)

A delegation from the Grenada Tourism Board and one hotelier officially wrapped up its regional promotion campaign, with a presentation to travel agents, tour operators and the media at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Tuesday, before moving on to Montego Bay.

 

Jamaica and CARICOM Partners to Negotiate Free Trade Agreement with Canada (Jamaica Information Service, 06/27/08)

Jamaica and its CARICOM partners are poised to commence negotiating a free trade agreement with Canada, which is the region's third largest trading partner. Speaking in the 2008/09 Sectoral Debate in the House on June 25, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Dr. Ken Baugh informed that the negotiations with Canada have been in the pipeline since 2001 and, although Canada obtained a Most-Favoured Nation (MFN) waiver in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for CARIBCAN up to 2011, they have already indicated that they will not be renewing this waiver.

As CARIFORUM countries prepare to sign and implement an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Union (EU), Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Dr. Ken Baugh, has emphasized that Jamaica must make every effort to be first in line with projects to take advantage of assistance under the agreement.

US big on trade with T&T (Trinidad Guardian, 06/26/08)

In 2007, two-way trade between T&T and the US totalled US$10.4 billion. The US imported US$8.7 billion worth of goods and services from T&T. T&T imported US$1.7 billion worth of products from the US. The above figures support the view of John Ries, head, economic section at the American Embassy, that T&T has a favourable investment-friendly climate.
