About the Office of International Affairs
As the Department’s lead on international energy issues, the Office of International Affairs is responsible for: (1) directing diplomatic outreach, (2) leading multilateral energy negotiations -- including in ministerial-level energy tracks in the G7, G20, APEC where the Secretary of Energy represents the U.S -- and (3) developing energy policies to advance the administration’s global climate, economic, and security goals through cooperative platforms like the International Energy Agency, the Clean Energy Ministerial, and Mission Innovation.
What will I be doing?
Fellows will be able to utilize their experience, knowledge, and education to contribute to the Office of International Affairs' (IA) implementation of energy and climate-focused technology, policy, and regulatory engagement with major emerging economies all over the world, in collaboration with the Department of Energy (DOE), our National Labs, the State Department, and other government agencies.
Uniquely, this fellowship will be in the IA front office, which oversees all of IA’s activities and gives fellows a bird’s eye view of the full scope of IA’s efforts. The fellow will participate in support of the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary.
Every day will be different and will include participating in support of bilateral meetings, where fellows will hear directly from senior foreign officials and corporates on the challenges and opportunities for clean energy collaboration. Fellows will have the opportunity to conduct research that informs policy and program development, learn to draft memos for senior U.S. government leaders, identify and assess policy options, and help build coalitions and collaborate with partners to mobilize resources that lead to real-world change.
Fellows will also contribute to a rapid response technical assistance fund designed to provide demand-drive assistance to a small number of major emitters to establish, and achieve, more ambitious climate targets. This type of targeted assistance helps partner countries overcome hurdles to the energy transition and strengthens our bilateral relationships. Past, similar approaches to bilateral support were critical to securing ambitious climate country commitments, and even more critical now to limit the devastating impact of global warming on the United States and the world.
Participant Benefits: As a participant, fellows will receive a monthly stipend. Stipends are based on the participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location, and are determined by IA. Other items may include an allowance for education and/or scientific activities, and/or a supplemental stipend to offset the cost of health insurance, as approved by IA. Participants are required to have health insurance for the duration of their appointment and are eligible to purchase health insurance plans offered through ORISE
