Dear INBRE partners,

Please see information below and attached about the NSF REU program at MDIBL, which offers summer research fellowships similar to those supported by INBRE. This may be an option for students at those institutions that do not have any available INBRE fellowship funding during the summer of 2021.

The MDI Biological Laboratory (MDIBL) is accepting applications for our 2021 summer NSF REU undergraduate research fellowship program. Application materials and program information are available on the MDIBL website.

The application deadline is February 12, 2021. The program dates are June 1 through August 7.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, it is uncertain whether we will be able to host students for a residency program at MDI Biological Laboratory in 2021. We are keeping open the option of a residency program but we also are prepared to offer a virtual program if that is necessary.

In 2020 we offered a successful online version of our NSF REU summer research fellowship that provided students with all the major program components, including a course called Communicating Science taught by graduate students from University of Maine and MDIBL faculty, a mentored research project, and a series of career-building and cohort-building activities. The summer culminated with our annual Summer Science Symposium.

We will accept the 2021 cohort of NSF REU students in March and will announce by the end of April whether the program will include residency at MDI Biological Laboratory. The program will provide a $5750 stipend. If we are able to bring students to the coast of Maine, the program also will cover all students costs for travel, housing, and food.

Please direct any program questions to Jane Disney at jdi...@mdibl.org
