Program Highlights From a SHPEP Graduate

“One of the highlights of the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) was the opportunity to practice hands-on activities every week,” says Emyli Peralta, a second-year dental student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. “We received hands-on training in restorative dentistry, taking radiographs and waxing up teeth. This experience gave us a glimpse into the daily life of a dentist and helped us understand the importance of being able to work well with your hands.”

New Release! 2023-2024 ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools

The 2023-2024 ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools is now available for students entering in Fall 2023 or Fall 2024. This all-digital Guide consists of a one-year subscription to the online directory of dental schools (the ADEA Dental School Explorer) and a PDF publication.

The brand-new PDF book complements the ADEA Dental School Explorer and contains a wealth of information, including:

 A chapter on the importance of access, diversity and inclusion;

 Tips on navigating the application process;

 A section on the holistic (whole file) admissions process;

 Information for Canadian and international students applying to Canadian or U.S. dental schools, and a chapter for U.S. students applying to Canadian dental schools;

 A section for gap-year students, career changers and re-applicants;

 Guidance on financing a dental education;

 Worksheets to help you gather information, set priorities and brainstorm ideas for your application; and

 Seven comparative data tables to help you make informed decisions about where to apply, which include statistics on dental school applicants, first-time, first-year enrollees and admissions requirements.

Even if you’re not applying to dental school in the next year, the information within can help you get an early start on your research and preparation.

Students for Interprofessional Practice and Education

Many dental schools across the United States are integrating interprofessional education (IPE) into their curriculum. The incorporation of IPE leads to interprofessional practice, which promotes comprehensive care across health care professions, aiming to strengthen the health care system and reduce disparities and costs. As research continues to provide evidence linking the association of oral and systemic health, the shift toward IPE in dental schools is inevitable.

Read on as third-year dental students Sara Kashani and Lena Syed share details about Students for Interprofessional Practice and Education, a student-led organization at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine created with a vision of fostering and supporting opportunities for interprofessional collaboration between dental and other health professions.

Is an Academic Dental Career in Your Future?

“There are many routes and career paths within dentistry. One such route is academic dentistry,” says Sarah Dobson, a second-year dental student at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry.

“Academic dental careers allow individuals to work outside of private clinical practice. These roles may look like part-time or full-time positions at a dental school through involvement in research, teaching a didactic or clinical course, serving as an attending in clinical practice or fulfilling an administrative role.” Read on to learn more about why Ms. Dobson is pursuing a career in academic dentistry and its benefits.
