Title: Adobe Lightroom Classic and Creative Cloud for Naturalists

Scheduling Details: July 12–18, 2026

Description: The advent of digital photography has opened up new worlds of opportunity for scientists, researchers, and naturalists to document their specimens with photographic images. Many of us have amassed catalogs comprising tens of thousands of images of flora and/or fauna. In this seminar we will explore tools for optimizing images for study or publication and for managing large catalogs of images to enable rapid access and retrieval. We will compare the software applications contained within the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of software, then focus on Adobe Lightroom Classic. We will discuss file formats (e.g. camera raw, DNF, JPG, TIFF), file locations, and backup strategies. We will delve into catalog management, hierarchical tagging, geotagging, and various ways to filter search results in our catalogs. We will explore Lightroom Classic’s tools for photo optimization, including cropping, straightening, exposure adjustments, spot removal, and presets. We will use a combination of tools in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop to focus-stack images to improve sharpness of subjects. We will also discuss specifications for building or purchasing a computer that is optimized for image processing. Throughout the seminar, the emphasis will be on techniques useful for biological field specimens, especially close-up and macro images. Workshop sessions will include demonstrations, group discussions, and hands-on activities using Adobe Lightroom Classic and Adobe Creative Cloud. Field visits will provide opportunities for collecting additional photos of the taxa of your choice.

Erika Mitchell (em...@cornell.edu) is a researcher, educator, photographer, and naturalist from Calais, Vermont. She is a frequent contributor to iNaturalist with a special interest in botanical observations. Her photographs have been published in Vermont Life and Arqueología Mexicana, as well as Environmental Science: Processes and Impacts, and other online journals and websites

Each summer since 1987, regional and national authorities in the field of natural history have come to the Eagle Hill Institute on the Eastern Maine Coast to lead intensive seminars on their specialties. Seminars involve field trips that are focused on learning about the ecology of species in their natural outdoor environment. The indoor classroom part of these seminars includes lectures, discussions, and lab identifications and studies of specimens that have been collected in the field. They begin with a Sunday late afternoon arrival and dinner at 7 PM, followed by an introductory program. Mondays through Fridays are full teaching days, with meal times as relaxed settings for informal discussions. Evenings are set aside for discussions by the fireplace in the dining hall's comfortable lounge or for follow-up classroom activities. They conclude after breakfast on Saturday.
