Title: Marine Macroalgae: Ecology, Identification, Distribution, and Importance
Instructor: Amanda Savoie
Dates: May 21–27, 2023

Description: Have you ever wondered how many species of seaweed can be found along the coast of Maine? Or where and how they can be collected? This seminar is designed to be an introduction to phycology (the study of algae), and is suitable for anyone who is curious about seaweed and would like to learn more. A general introduction to the three main groups of seaweed (brown, green and red algae) will be combined with field trips to explore the rocky intertidal zone at low tide. This seminar will be a mix of lectures, fieldwork and laboratory time, and topics such as ecology, evolution, identification and taxonomy will be covered. The importance of marine macroalgae to the coastal environment as well as human uses (including edible seaweeds) will also be discussed. Students will have time to collect and identify specimens, and learn how to prepare a personal herbarium of their own collections. We will also go over tips and tricks for identification of seaweeds, and discussion of common difficulties encountered.

Interactive color flyer for this seminar is available here!
Any questions about the content of the seminar should be directed to the instructor (email address can be found on the flyer).
Details about costs, discounts, accommodations, and meals can be found here.
