Description: In this seminar we will take a field and specimen-based approach to identification of New England Asteraceae genera and species. We will explore Asteraceae systematics and identification through short lectures, fieldwork, and laboratory studies using fresh and dried specimens. Lectures and work sessions will cover topics such as macro and micro-morphology, polyploidy as a driver of diversity within Asteraceae, ecology, biogeography, and pollination biology as it relates to morphology and identification. Participants are encouraged to bring their own pressed specimens to study and share with others. Each day will include short lectures, guided lab keying/dissections, field trips and identification of plants in their natural habitats, and keying of pressed and fresh-collected specimens. Evenings will include time for question sessions, help with keying and interpreting morphology, and independent studies.
