Market Your CV Like a New Product

By Jawahar Mathews
Your cv is a passport to a new job. CV enables a prospective employer to get a glimpse of what you are and visualize what you might be able to do in the job in case you are hired. It should provide all information about your capabilities and the responsibilities that you have undertaken. Rather than talking about what you are capable of doing or what you can do, talk about situations where you have implemented systems and executed projects. Don’t beat around the bush .You can boast of your ability in climbing Mount Everest but talk about the small mole  hills you  have already climbed that will interest the employer.
A cv  is your face in a job market. You get 30 seconds to be accepted or rejected. Love at first sight or rejection at first sight. In today’s me too market place even getting through an interview needs lots of preparation of your cv. In fact, you need to package and market your cv first. There should be a good format and components and structure to grab the eyeballs of the interviewers
Play Number games. Instead of writing, I always achieved target. Say the target was achieved by 125%.In fact when the co achieved 115% of its target I was number one among the sales team and achieved 50% more than my last year’s target.
Actions speak-Say my article in the news paper on “opportunities in financial services”   attracted 189 people to respond and converted 9 of them in to the job. Also my article in the FACEBOOK, TWITTER and LINKED IN attracted 321 new enquires with my present company's products.
Sell your skills-like – ‘‘My talk at the Rotary club of Uganda    and to the University student at Nairobi has changed the inhibition about young graduates in taking Insurance as a career”. Sell your skill sets that impacted action. Today employers are looking for candidates who can deliver  more than they are paid for – Remember ! a milk giving  cow is more attractive than a calf

What I Wish I Knew When I First Became the Boss from wall street journal

By Paul Beckett
Like most managers, I suspect, I was thrust into management – as a bureau chief supervising reporters for The Wall Street Journal — without a lick of training. One day you are being managed, the next you are managing. What do you do?
That was eight years ago. It was an unnerving experience. In many ways, it still is. But after a while, by messing up, trying to remember successes, and simply benefiting from years of perspective, a few lessons have gelled about what it is really like to be a manager (as opposed to what people who write about management tend to say about managing.)
One of those realizations is that what’s required for managing in one situation at one company has a lot in common with similar situations at different companies, even in different industries. So, in the hopes that this may help new managers escape the most obvious traps I fell into – and to try to pass on the advice I wish someone had given me when I started – here are six tips:
1. You know more than you think you do.
So, nobody trained you for the job. But in some ways you’ve been training for years. Spend some time thinking about the managers you liked and those you loathed. Think about how they handled you: Were they enthusiastic and supportive (good) or nitpicking pencil-pushers (bad)? Did they treat you like a colleague (good) or a reluctant pupil (bad)? Were they frank with bad news and criticism (good) or did they deceive by trying to shade the harsh truth (bad)? Make a list of both good and bad and think often of those people as you go about your business. Even if the circumstances are different, broadly try to emulate how a manager you liked approached the job.
2. It’s good to be likeable but don’t manage to be liked.
You must have heard that it is better to be respected than liked. This is a nonsensical comparison as it suggests the two are mutually exclusive; it says, in effect, that you have to be unpleasant to be respected, an approach that may appeal to a certain type of physical education teacher but is hardly a helpful guide for middle managers.
That said, the biggest temptation in management is to try to be everyone’s friend. A lot of our upbringing and social behavior revolves around our success in being liked. But being liked as your overarching management ethos is guaranteed to backfire: You’ll perform poorly and wind up disliked. Just watch an episode of the British comedy series “The Office” to get my drift.
The other ridiculous aspect of the liked versus respected debate is that you can’t ensure either by your actions; both being liked and respected are entirely dependent on other people’s views of you. Better to focus on the things you can control, like your management style and approach to problems. Then you can hope that, ideally, you are both liked and respected as a result but that is largely for others to decide.
3. People don’t mind being managed.
It’s easy to assume that because you are a new manager, no one will want to do what you say. So you are very cautious in asking people to do things and giving directions. That’s probably better than constant meddling or overbearing behavior. But it overlooks a major factor: That most employees value direction and participation from their managers, indeed they sometimes clamor for it, to help them do their best work. That should be your ultimate goal, so help them out.
That said, you also will find those who hate being managed, perhaps by anyone, maybe just by you. Deal with it. Be sympathetic – up to the point where you think their demands or gripes have crossed the line into whining. If you continue to listen but don’t act, these people will eat up your time. And that is time away from productive, uncomplaining employees, which is demoralizing for them and for you. Worst of all, it makes it appear that a troublemaker is more highly valued because they command more management attention.
4. Show enthusiasm for things that you expect others to be enthusiastic about.
My best bosses got as excited about a big story as I did, which showed not just in one meeting but in their keeping track of progress, asking about key interviews, sharing in disappointments and celebrating breakthroughs. It was a valuable lesson. As a manager, you need to be communicating all the time. You forget that many people’s jobs are, if not exactly lonely, then at least solitary and often thankless pursuits that sharing can transform.
It also has benefits for you as a manager. As a reporter, life can be binary: If you are onto a great story, life is good; if you are not, life is bad. Management doesn’t bring that singular clarity of highs and lows. At any given moment there will be some very promising things happening but also, inevitably, a constant backbeat of less pleasant tasks that need to be done. So relish and celebrate the successes when they come.
5. Be frank when frankness is required.
It’s better to give bad news honestly than to try to sugarcoat it. I wasted a lot of time early on trying to massage messages that, in the end, left those I was speaking to even more confused and apprehensive about what was happening than they needed to be. That did them a huge disfavor when I thought I was doing them a favor.
Obviously tact is worthwhile. But so is clarity in communication so that those on the receiving end feel that they are being told the whole story and the rationale behind it. It is true that people often resist change; it is also true that they are almost infinitely adaptable.
6. You are always a work in progress.
Even after re-reading all these points, inevitably I am struck by how far short of the mark I fall even on my own advice. But I hope that is a better place to be than thinking you have it all figured out. Once you start to feel that, it’s probably a sign that you’ve stop trying or are getting blasé about the daily challenges that managing presents. Before long, you’ll pay the price.
