Hii would like to automate engineering designs such as electrical, water, sewerage distribution designs instead of performing calculations/modeling in conventional approach using excel then manually drafting the drawings in autocad. So basically i want to program a code so that the autocad can perform all engineering design calculations and produce drawings automatically in an automated way. The question is which API do you suggest to use to perform this task e.g. Autolisp, ObjectARX, VBA (if still available), .Net....etc? I am not an expert to know the diferences amonh them that's why i would appreciate your advise?

Note that i am not planning to create any new block within autocad, neither to develop a software for sale out of this, it is just to have a smart program/tool to perform design and drawings production in automated way?

As mentioned earlier, the autocad drawings will have only lines and blocks which are already saved in autocad library, so no requirements for beautiful graphics or any new blocks to be introduced. The idea ia just to make the code/program execute the design calculations and produce the drawings automatically as opposed to the conventional approach of spending a lot of time doing engineering design/calculations then spending more time drawing the design in autocad.

I would not waste my time writing what others have spent years developing to do what you want, my principal work is civil and spent 40 years doing it and just so many off the shelf packages available, Sewer and stormwater drainage to mention two. Water mains pressure pipes I have seen something just google I think its an add on for CIV3D.

I know I did watermain/sewer layouts on plan of subdivisions in lisp to produce the layouts then read into an analysis package. Producing full hydraulic analysis plan and long sections, stuff like obstruction clash checks.

thanks for your reply. I don't mean to write a program to do hydraulic modeling which as you mentioned softwares are already available to do so. What i meant is to automate the process of producing the layout plans before sending it to the software for modeling, then upon receiving the shape files from the software to be able to automate the process of producing profiles, finalizing the autocad layout drawings, automatically mitigate clashes between utilities,..etc.

I will try to find the draw pline with offset its for subdivison layouts it draw straights being parallel to lot boundary and allows swapping of road side as you proceed it can be used for what you want.

I am starting out in the course. I am a trained Water and Environmental Engineer and I want to practice design. I graduated in 2013 with Bsc Water & Environmental Engineering but up to date I feel that I do not have the right skills to undertake Engineering design tasks. I have taken my time to learn c3d with the hope that i will learn some industry tips and even practice on my own as a freelancer for the time being before i get full-employment. (I hope somebody is getting my worry!?). I need recommendations on three areas:

2. Books and/or videos that will enable me handle civil/water engineering infrastructure design in autocad/c3d (Not sure which one is more applicable in infrastrcuture design) without getting support as an intern.

N.B: I have had to juggle between learning archicad so that I design houses but i feel that is out of scope with my training. But I also got to learn that Autocad may also be used in designing houses.

1. I think I recall a post where most c3d books are not in print for current versions, personal have not looked, but older versions from 2012+ should work as a guide.

2. YouTube is great and I've learned things there. Also get an account at Autodesk University (AU). Some of the AU stuff is advanced but it's your pace not someone else's. Grasp a concept and run.

3. We have all been there. I nor anyone hear truly has the absolute perfect or best way to accomplish a certain goal sometimes it requires help, thinking OOTB and just asking hear as you have. Someone while chime in.

Good luck hope those little bits help and I'm sure more will follow. Everyone here is hear to help.

Standard Drawings

MSD has updated its acceptable Standard Drawings. These details are for use with MSD designed projects and for private development design. The details are expected to be used as presented, but modifications may be accepted on a case-by-case basis. The appropriate drawings need to be referenced with each project within the Special Provisions and drawings. Any modification from a standard should be shown as a separate detail within the set of plans. Standard Drawing details should be referenced by number on the plans.

The drawings are meant to be flexible documents. There will be revisions and additions from time to time. It is important that the users make recommendations for changes to the details or suggest the creation of new details. All comments will be reviewed.

Design Manual

The MSD Design Manual is a guide for the planning and design of stormwater systems, flood protection works, sanitary sewers, erosion control structures, small sanitary pump stations, small wastewater treatment plants and associated activities MSD.

The Design Manual identifies a single set of standards, submittal requirements and approval procedures to be used in the planning and design of projects within the MSD service area. The Design Manual is not intended to serve as a step-by-step design methodology nor can the Design Manual address every situation, which may arise. The application of sound engineering/surveying principles and judgment combined with the information contained in the manual are necessary to complete the planning, design, and preparation of related construction documents for stormwater, sanitary sewer and/or wastewater projects. Approval of plans by MSD shall not relieve the designer or developer from required compliance with the provisions of the manual unless a written variance is received from MSD.

MSD Specifications

MSD Standard Specifications and Inflow & lnfiltration (I/I) Specifications have been developed for construction and rehabilitation of stormwater systems, flood protection works, sanitary sewers, erosion control structures, small sanitary pump stations, small wastewater treatment plants and associated activities within MSD's service area. In particular, the Standard Specifications, the S- Pages, are typically for new construction of facilities and appurtenances. They provide a description of work, materials that are approved for use, and the necessary workmanship and procedures to be followed in constructing the various types of projects. They form a vital part of the contract documents for MSD capital construction as well as privately funded developments. They are expected to be interpreted in cooperation with the project drawings and as a complement to them.

The Inflow and Infiltration (I/I) specifications are included in the II- pages. These are an approved set of standards for rehabilitation of MSD systems. Primarily, they were developed to help reduce the effects of I/I by defining the materials, describing the work and the process for various repair types.

AutoCAD Sample Drawings

Chapter 4 of the MSD Design Manual outlines AutoCAD standards in order to provide consistency with respect to plan and document development and for compatibility with respect to the sharing of data and document storage. Sample drawings have been created in order to demonstrate the use and function of the standard layers, linetypes, and symbols for typical plan sheets. Not all plan sheets or situations have been addressed.

MSD is in the process of developing a AutoCAD Civil 3D template. This template is a continuously evolving project. As consultants use this template MSD would like feedback including, but not limited to, styles that needed to be added, removed, or revised. If you have created a style that you believe should be included please let us know.
