Fish Tales commits to maintaining our status as one of the premier fish markets in all of NYC. Our passion fuels our commitment to start our day at 2 am to visit the Fulton Fish Market and personally hand-select only the freshest quality fish and seafood for our customers to savor.

The Fish Tales Foundation was founded to support the Fish Tales-mission with projects on sustainable fisheries and consumer awareness. Together we expand the offering of fair seafood and step by step create a better world with healthier oceans.

I dive into a leaf-strewn swimming pool on a hot LA night. Finally, the itching ends. I am a clown fish darting through the reef. I am a needlefish too quick to catch. On the ocean bottom I lurk like an anglerfish, mouth open, lure blinking.

When my mother and her mother are not in the motherland, their mouths are always hungry. They gape like gar in a stream of fish burgers, tartar sauce, and soggy french fries. Their eyes never blink. The scales of my mother and her mother shimmer in the fluorescent light of Lucky supermarket, their shopping cart a cornucopia of the four food groups no one eats in the motherland.

I learned to fish here in the Thousand Islands the year before we were married. My husband, Gary, grew up fishing. It was his solace. Our first years together up here, we would get up early, load our fishing tackle into the St. Lawrence River skiff and row to our favorite fishing spot between Murray and Grenell.

Far and near went that fish, on a light perch line! We got the anchor up and passed the pole from one end of the boat to the other, try to keep the line taut but not tight, and not loosened. Time and again the fish came so near that we could see the spots of the muskallonge, but we had nothing with which to land him. Finally in early afternoon we succeeded in getting near enough to Hub Island to call out to a man on the shore to come out and help us land a big fish! He put out from shore at once, managed to get close enough to our boat so that he and I exchanged places and after more anxious minutes he was able to land the muskallonge with the help of his gaff hook. I was sorry not to have been in the boat when it was landed, but we were much pleased with ourselves to bring home the fish, which measured just under five feet. When we cleaned the fish, a nineteen inch pickerel had been barely swallowed and inside the pickerel was our perch of the morning.

Here on Grenell, we have an annual Pike Tournament for the youth of the island. The trophy stands in the Community House and a plaque full of names hangs on the wall. Max McCune has been on the trophy for the last several years. But this year all that changed. This year there is a new name on the Grenell Island Pike Tournament Trophy and a great fish story to go with it.

One must do a complete emotional 180 when they think somebody is generously bringing them a cup of juice or a delicious smoothie, and it actually turns out to be the plastic coffin containing their beloved pet fish carcass.

But I must admit I was not the best fish mom in the world. While I did my best to keep the pH and the temperature in check, when his bowl got too dirty, he developed a disease and was covered in splotches. Poor little guy! I was terrified this would be another morbid red SOLO situation, but he survived. Over and over again.

Jean-Ralphio was invincible. He lived way longer than my first fish and had survived long, bumpy car rides, disease-ridden fish bowls and frequent neglect from his bad caretaker (me). We made jokes about how he was probably immortal.

The perfect retreat for families to reacquaint. With 2 bedrooms, each providing a king-sized bed. Copper Fox also has a beautiful loft with a pullout sofa. Located in an older established fishing community, Copper Fox offers a serene retreat with a multitude of exciting adventures.

The general goal is to catch as many fish and tell the most outlandish stories about their size possible. The machine's backglass is topped with a plastic fish that thrashes its tail when the player achieves certain goals, and the players launches balls with an autoplunger shaped like a fishing rod.

Our fishes refreshed by a new supply of water, horses fed and dinner over, we took our departure from town and men and were swept into the wilderness by a storm. Fourteen miles of unbroken road had to be traveled ere the Old Forge could be reached, and however great the difficulties to be encountered, they must be overcome. The fish must reach the Fulton waters or they perish.

It was soon decided that two should remain all night with the fishes, and the other two push forward with the horses to the hotel. This being agreed upon, the teamster and the writer took their departure, agreeing to return as soon as possible with a fresh team. I would have willingly have given my place to Mark Twain, that he might have ridden that horse bareback through the banks of snow, he would have had communicated to his sensitive system the pleasures of a skeleton ride, and though the animal stood fifteen hands high, I could shut my eyes and see nothing of the quadruped but his back-bone. That impressed me.

The wind screamed around the building like a wild animal let loose from the mountain. The snow beat the window panes and banked up the doors. The storm might rage were the boys in. The team that we expected to find fresh for our return had just come in, and was worn and fatigued. It was out of the question, therefore, to go back for the men and fishes that night.

With the first light of day the teams started. The snow was still falling. The day had hardly worn away when our companions issued into the clearings from the woods. Men and horses were literally covered with ice and snow. They advanced toward the hotel after the manner of machines, rather than human beings. Our greatest concern was for the fishes.

Mr. Marks was aroused, and for three hours, it was one continued effort to resuscitate the young salmon. At last we saw a decided change in their condition for the better, but agreed that the surest plan to preserve their lives was to put them at once into the lake. I aroused a man to aid in cutting a hole in the ice. After much trouble we succeeded in making a cavity large enough for the small salmon to escape through. The balance were taken on a hand sleigh far up the stream and put in to the Fulton Chain. It may be well to remind anglers, when seated in their boats amid the green foliage, enjoying the scenery of these lakes, unsurpassed in beauty, trolling or casting the fly, of the winter day when these fishes came to the waters.

I believe it is the first stocking of the Fulton Chain lakes, there may be others noted in the Forge House registers that the Museum has. The Forge House would become the first headquarters for the stocking until later on a fish hatchery would be installed up the lakes in the 1880s until moved permanently to Old Forge near where the present Town of Webb police headquarters are. there is a fish hatchery article on the Almanack.

That's too funny, Betsy! My husband is an avid (make that all caps: AVID) fly fisherman with all the gadgets and gear money can buy. He ties his own flies and has a fly pole that's probably worth more than my computer.

This was a journey toward awareness and understanding. We talked with fish farmers, shell fish farmers, shrimpers, commercial fishermen, seafood packing/shipping company owners, an attorney that specializes in maritime law, and the quilting and church ladies of Harker Island who shared a home-made meal and stories of growing up in multi-generation seafaring families.

Then another mandate came from Raleigh to reduce incidental fish caught by another 40%! The frustration and worry of the possibility of loosing their businesses due to regulations such as these was plain on their faces. In fact, it was palpable.

Dad is an avid outdoor sportsman, even in a wheelchair at age 84 (today is his birthday). As kids, our family vacations consisted, every year, of multiple trips to Erieau, Ontario, Canada to fish the Bay. By the time I was old enough to drive, my interests turned to other things; like school activities, hanging out with friends and dating. Here is something I have been reluctant to tell Dad since then.

Laced with Afro-Caribbean history and myth and interspersed with Spanish, Yoruba, and Lukumi dialects, these poems create a poetic atlas of cultures as they document the centuries-long, open-sea migrations from Africa to the Caribbean to the Florida coast. Recurring throughout these poems is the image of the wise fish, a witness whose eyes were never closed to the perilous journeys that brought so many to the shores of North America, creating a vibrant Afro-Latino-Caribbean culture tempered by loss and memory. Infused with the musicality of the oral tradition, this collection gives voice to the great courage and tragedy of those who weather the migratory experience.
