Hello Cardozo NLG Members,
We had a great first meeting the other week!
Here are some notes:
New board members:
We elected four new board members: Sara Sucher, Mari Stein, Anthony Carl, and Brandon Kronstat.
In addition, we had one late entry -- Ryan Krause -- who you will all have a chance to vote onto the board at our next meeting.
Event Planning
We also began planning events for the year, including:
A teach-in on DACA. (Currently, we are planning something for shortly after the final applications are due, to prepare people for the after-effects. More news to follow.)
Monthly "brown bag" lunches about pressing political issues, where one member can research an issue, give a brief overview, and we can discuss.
If you are interested in helping with either of these, or have more ideas, please let us know or come to the next brown bag or meeting!
NLG NYC and Disorientation THIS SATURDAY:
One of the best parts of being an NLG member, is that it is a large organization with a great network in NYC and nationwide!
With that in mind, we HIGHLY encourage everyone to become a member of the NYC chapter of the National Lawyers Guild:
http://nlgnyc.org/how-to-join
There is a discounted rate for students, and being a member will immediately plug you in to conversations and opportunities on movement lawyering in NYC and beyond.
To that end, THIS SATURDAY is the annual
NYC NLG Disorientation (flier attached)
This is an annual gathering of all students from every NLG chapter at every law school in the greater NYC area. There will be legal observer training (YOU can be one of the people at protest wearing green hats and getting people out of jail), Know Your Rights Trainings on dealing with the police, immigration officials, etc., and panels on subjects like "How to survive law school with your values intact," and "Movement lawyering."
There is free food, and it is a great way to connect with like-minded attorneys and law students.
Upcoming Brown Bag:
Our first Brown Bag has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 18, in 5SEM from 12noon - 1:15 PM.
At the moment, we are considering discussing political policing in the age of Trump. One of our board members, Keegan Stephan, may give a little bit of background on the issue, as he is currently involved in two lawsuits against the NYPD: one for use of military weapons against protesters, and one about undercover surveillance of protesters.
However, given the rapid changes in contemporary politics, we may change the topic if something pressing comes up at the last minute.
No matter what the subject, it will surely be a lively conversation with engaged law students, and we will likely use the time to keep planning our upcoming actions, so join us!
That is all from us for now.
Stay tuned for more!
