ABOUT THE PAROLE PREP PROJECT:
The Project works in collaboration with parole-eligible people serving life sentences in New York State prisons as they prepare for their interviews with the Board of Parole. Since 2013, we have trained over 250 community volunteers to work alongside and in solidarity with 120 parole applicants to develop solid release plans, create compelling advocacy packets, and practice necessary interviewing skills.

The Project is founded on the idea that the transformation of the prison system must be guided and led by those most impacted by it. By advocating for the release of parole eligible people from prisons, we are advocating for the release of those who are ultimately at the forefront of this movement to end incarceration.

WHY ATTEND:
As Parole Preparation Project volunteers, you’ll work in teams of two or three. Through visits, letters and phone calls, you'll support applicants as they prepare for all aspects of their interview with the Board of Parole. You’ll also be part of the growing state-wide parole reform movement. Volunteering with the Project is both a deeply personal and meaningful experience, as well as a political education in the devastating practices of the New York State Parole Board, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, and the broader criminal legal system.

The training will be accessible to attorneys, non-attorneys, experts and people who are entirely new to this work. No prior experience is required. However, this training is mandatory for people interested in becoming volunteers with the Parole Preparation Project. Unlike in the past, we will not be offering CLE credit for this training.

MORE ABOUT PAROLE IN NEW YORK STATE:

In New York State, more than 8,000 people (20% of the prison population), is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole. Due to the harsh, racist and retributive practices of the Board of Parole, thousands of parole-eligible people serving these sentences remain behind bars. Many have accepted full responsibility for their crimes and done exceptional work to demonstrate their suitability for release. They are artists, scholars, educators, mentors, and more, and have spent decades in prison.

The practices of the Parole Board exemplify nationwide criminal justice policies that are rooted in racism and retribution, and result in extreme and indefinite punishment. These policies amplify the system’s devastating impact on already marginalized communities, specifically communities of color. Further, the Board systematically denies release to aging and elderly people.

Without intervention, thousands of parole-eligible people will remain behind bars indefinitely, isolated from their families, subject to brutality and neglect, and largely alone in their fight for release. Many believe they will die in prison, and in reality, some will.

We hope you'll join us in the struggle to bring people home.
