My wife and I were involved in starting a Catholic High School here in Texas which has been tough sledding to say the least and I was a Capital Campaign chairman for our local Catholic grade school. It is tough to convince folks to commit funds especially with this horrendous recession. The costs of running the catholic schools is astronomically more expensive than when you and I went and one reason is there are no sisters or brothers to provide low cost, superb teachers!! I wish I could be more optimistic. I mean once you are clear of the lower parking lot, it is pretty safe ...right? With the continuing cash crunch and the disadvantageous geography of Gibbons, the question of long term viability is the major question to answer. Historically, most alumni give to their colleges and not their high schools unless their kids will be attending. Have any of us actually sent kids to Gibbons and have them graduate? If we haven't, why should other parents? In order effectively to do so, though, I would VERY MUCH like someone (perhaps the administrative staff at Gibbons) to put together a briefing on both the economics of the TC closing (those are CRAZY numbers, losing a third of their students-what tough economic times persist!) and what Gibbons projects as the economic impact of the economy on its own student population. I’m assuming TC was not subsidized by the Archdiocese?
For us to make the pitch, we really need to know the numbers, the projections and why Gibbons differs from that TC scenario.
Sad. Coincidentally, our firm represents the Howard Community College and they (and most other community colleges) are SWAMPED with admissions, (they projected a 4 percent increase, and this semester, it’s up a full ELEVEN percent) because many (mostly middle-class) parents who’d have otherwise (in better times) taken equity loans or just bucked up, have pulled their kids out of 4 year institutions they’ve been in to have them matriculate their first two years at the Community College. Fully 1/3 of all students there are asking for financial aid. (BTW, I’m co-chairing THEIR scholarship fund, so. . . . . ).
Thanks, again, for your efforts.

Just a note that Towson Catholic announced that it is closing. IT had 244 students and lost 81 in the past weeks. We will need to step up to help Gibbons survive.

Greetings Members of the Class of 1969
I also attended that meeting that Jim talked about in his email below, and I agree that there is much that needs to be done to help Gibbons. Mike Matevich has taken on the project of developing an accurate list of alumni, so that Gibbons can reach out to its alumni on a regular basis. At this point you are thinking, “So they can ask for support”. You are correct. It is the Alumni of any institution, high school, college or grad school, who are called upon to supplement the school, since tuition never covers all of the costs. In Gibbons case, the situation is more dire.
Jim and I and a few other of our class mates have volunteered not only to provide good names, addresses and emails to Mike Matevich, but also to reach out to our class for a class gift. Two of the things we have in mind are covering the costs (production and TV time of a cable commercial to be run during basketball and football seasons that Gibbons is here to stay and is doing well. We need to refute the rumors. The other would be to cover part of the cost of a development director. To do both of these things, we will need to raise at least $20,000. $40, 000 would be better, but that is a stretch, unless one of you wants to put up a matching gift. Give it some thought. We will be calling soon. It was good to see you guys. We need your help. Jack

Class of 1969
I attended a meeting on the future of Cardinal Gibbons last night. For much of the past 25 years there have been persistent rumors on the demise of Gibbons. Recently these rumors were intensified in light of the reports that Seton-Keough and Gibbons were combining some programs and administration functions. To steal a phrase, the death of Gibbons may be a bit premature. Based on the turnout and support I saw last night and combined with factual information provided by those in the know, Gibbons is alive and well. Hopefully, last night's meeting will be the first step for Gibbons to not only endure but to persevere over the next 50 years.
Some of the info provided:
1. The recent accreditation process gave Gibbons a glowing report.
2. All 65 of the 2009 graduates have been accepted to college and have received over 3.5 million dollars in scholarships.
3. The incoming class has 70 applicants with more expected.
4. 13 of the faculty are Gibbons alums.
5. Much of "merger" with Seton-Keough has been put on hold, but there will be exchanges of students for particular classes, not unlike in past years.
6. Most importantly, the archdiocese wants Gibbons to succeed.
The caveat is that Gibbons does need some help, especially in these trying economic times. Gibbons has never received the financial support from Alumni that other schools receive. We have never had a strong Alumni organization with a "real" Alumni directory, an Alumni business directory and regular newsletters to give the Alumni a sense of belonging. Last I looked, it is very hard to ask someone for some help when you don't know where they are. Last night, a process was started to gather this information on each of Gibbons' classes. Jack A and I volunteered to gather this info on the Class of 1969-----OOPs----already done.
I am forwarding your info to be included in the Alumni directory. If you do not wish to be included, let me know.
Jim Frank

Exactly. The world has changed. Utility costs are going to soar also under the Obama plan making it even harder. Bruce
