I don't know if you remember subscribing to this list, a little while
ago now, but we've not been making much use of it recently.
It turns out there are others in Cardiff that are geeking it up
together. They've been meeting up and enjoying discussions about
software & sci-fi, gadgetry & gaming, maths & music, fantasy &
futurism, robotics & role-playing, hardware & history. They suggest
that you can even bring your latest hardware hacking project along -
or just a book you've been reading, whatever...
I realise that this might not be the reason you originally signed up
to Cardiff Geeks, you might consider yourself a web/dev-type and have
no interest in these topics. Equally, I expect a number of you might
raise an eyebrow. Things are very small and cosy at the moment, with
only a few members - I'm definitely going to be heading along from now
on and I hope some of you guys will too.
The next meeting is at 8pm 23rd of Feb in Nos Da. Hope to see you there.
Ian

To get a feel for things, here is some mintues from their last meeting:
"We talked briefly about the scope of possibilities for the event - including
Hackerspaces and much bigger events than we could possibly do at them moment.
For the moment though, we'll probably want to grow organically, adding friends
and acquaintances.
Carl enthused about Spotify - the relatively new music-streaming startup. We
didn't get a demo (Carl's laptop didn't stay connected to the pub's wireless,
and Spotify doesn't run yet under Linux, so I tried running it under Wine, but
my Wine config didn't do sound, which is kind of the point with Music
streaming!)
I managed to get my laptop to stay on the wireless network and email Steve who
suggested that we could have a meeting in February up at the Otley Arms in
Pontypridd (a fine microbrewery near Steve with a function room too)
I reckon it's a great idea. (We'll need to decide whther this is the *main*
Geek meeting for February, or an additional one.)
We also talked about Tim O'Reilly, Richard Feynman, Stephen Pinker, Jeff Raskin,
Wikipedia (and other smaller Wikis for more specific & smaller uses.)
We talked about iTunes, Songbird and other media players.
We mentioned tagging, del.icio.us (yeah, I like the older spelling), Flickr and
Twitter
We briefly mentioned Barack Obama and also the news that MPs expenses are not
to be exempt from Freedom of Information.
Carl asked for a demo of vi - so we had a short (non-flame-war) discussion of
editors and othe favourite tools. I gave a very short demo of my vi skills,
since it's one the tools of my trade."
