Hello,

A mate of a mate started the Hackspace project - with an aim to
provide a non profit organisation to back hackspaces in the uk.

You can view more information at http://hackspace.org.uk/

There is currently a hackspace in london, birmingham and leeds. Would
anyone be interested in helping me start one for cardiff / south
Wales?

You can see what they can help with here: http://hackspace.org.uk/starting.php

Cheers,

Pete

I'd definitely be interested in helping out....sounds pretty awesome.

What would we need to get started, how could we raise funds etc?

Is anyone aware of any spaces that might be available locally?

I think we just send "Russ" (email address on the starting.php page)
an email and say we want to start one. We'd have to become members
and probably donate around £10 a month. Then we get a share of the
funds if we request them to be earmarked for ours I think.

A note: At the moment (looking at the "Reports" page - all funds are
earmarked for the London one as the project has only just got off the
ground. I imagine it will take a few months to get going)

I will keep a look out for spaces we could use.

This has got "Welsh Assembly grant" written all over it. Seriously, if
you can get £4500 in aid to start up a psychic business, you should
surely get money for something like this. [citation:

Did anyone else spy Mark Heseltine's recent tweet about attempting to
actually give this idea some legs?

Care to elaborate Mark? How are you getting on?

Hey Ian,

well it's very early days... I'd been thinking about this for quite some time (as I'm sure others do) but then, after seeing London Hackspace talking at OpenTech the other week, I got motivated to try and get something going. But the project needs others who want to be involved and help organise. There certainly is a lot of interest so far, but we've not even had a first meeting yet, and there is a scary amount of stuff that needs to get done.

So far, what you can see is basically all there is. A twitter account, a logo suggestion, and a very small presence on a wiki, which I've just updated - see here for latest thoughts and so on http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/Hackspace_Cardiff I have also suggested the IRC channel #HackspaceCardiff on freenode as a place to meet online.

I have used the pronoun "we" not "I" everywhere because I encourage others to get involved.

We've had some offers of help from the UK Hackspace people, who've pointed us to this site

They've also given some suggestions for legal structures, and offered a domain name redirection.

It seems likely that we'll need to self-fund, at least initially, although longer-term a mixture of funding sources is recommended. So, some sort of financial commitment will be required.

If anyone reading this is interested in helping organise, please do get in touch....

all the best,
Mark
