by default CarCast downloads the last 2 episodes, but that can be configured to be 2,4,6,8,10 or unlimited.

To adjust this, go into the subscriptions, then long press on a subscription.   The choose edit.   You can then change the amount it downloads.

To get past podcasts, you must "erase history" for the subscription.     CarCast will then redownload subscriptions from the past.     I usually will then just skip over ones I have heard.
