We introduce: World Biochar Certificate (WBC)

Good day,

The production of biochar using industrial pyrolysis plants extends far beyond the borders of Europe. Many manufacturers worldwide already follow the European Biochar Certificate (EBC) guidelines for certifying their biochar and carbon sinks.

WBC – EBC for the globe

We are pleased to introduce you today to our new World Biochar Certificate (WBC) guidelines for biochar certification. The WBC is better aligned with the global biochar market, while incorporating the central and essential elements of the EBC. Biochar certified under WBC can generate carbon sink certificates in accordance with the EBC C-Sink guidelines, whose credits are well recognized for offsetting CO₂ emissions in the international voluntary market.

As important elements of WBC can be mentioned:

  • Certification is exclusively available for countries outside the European Union and all EFTA (European Free Trade Association) states.
  • WBC has three certification categories:

WBC-Premium
WBC-Agro
WBC-Materials

  • The analytical limits for heavy metals and organic contaminants differ slightly from EBC.
  • The carbon balance of the biochar production must be positive.
  • Exceptions for heat recovery in production are possible, e.g. for mobile pyrolysis units.
  • EBC C-Sink guidelines can be applied for the certification of carbon sinks.

We are pleased to introduce the WBC guidelines and answer your questions in a webinar on October 11, 2023, at 3:00 PM CET.
