Synopsis: This study evaluates the integration of trees into agricultural landscapes as a strategy for climate mitigation without compromising agricultural yields. Using expert elicitation, the maximum tree cover for 53 cropping and grazing system categories was estimated, resulting in the first global datasets on CO2 removal potential. The findings indicate that croplands can remove up to 1.86 PgCO2 yr−1, while grazing lands can contribute an additional 1.45 PgCO2 yr−1, with tropical/subtropical biomes driving the highest potential. Overall, increasing tree cover across 2.6 billion hectares of agricultural land could sequester up to 3.3 billion tons of CO2 annually, exceeding emissions from cars. This approach presents a cost-effective solution for climate mitigation, emphasizing the need for supportive policies and incentives to facilitate widespread adoption.

Mineral precipitation occurs when seawater pH exceeds 10.0, primarily resulting in Mg(OH)2, transitioning to CaCO3 over time. These findings, alongside models of alkaline plume dynamics, will inform the expected carbon dioxide removal in future OAE pilot studies, emphasizing the need for further experiments that mimic field conditions, including biological activity and ocean circulation.

Terrestrial ecosystems acted as a net GHG sink of 0.9 Pg CO2-eq. yr−1, mainly from CO2 absorption but offset by CH4 and N2O emissions. While BU and TD estimates for CH4 and N2O align, the BU estimate for the land CO2 sink is significantly higher. GHG emissions have declined by 1.2 Pg CO2-eq. yr−1 since the 1990s, but the land CO2 sink has weakened, especially in Northern Europe due to increased forest management. High CH4 and N2O emissions are concentrated in Belgium, the Netherlands, and southern UK. The drought year of 2003 saw the highest net emissions of CO2 and total GHGs.

Notably, croplands with a history of conversion from grassland are losing SOC at −0.26 Mg ha−1 year−1, while grasslands converted from cropland are gaining SOC at 0.27 Mg ha−1 year−1, indicating ongoing SOC changes due to historical LUC.

The study highlights the crucial role of subalpine forests in carbon cycling and their potential in mitigating climate change within the QTP.

Using the Integrated Assessment Model REMIND, the authors find that while an integrated market with a uniform carbon price provides an economically efficient contribution of CDR, it may not adequately address sustainability risks, leading to potential overuse of CDR. The analysis shows that limiting CDR can reduce the financial burden on public finance, decrease reliance on geologic CO2 storage, and result in lower cumulative emissions. However, this increased ambition incurs higher total mitigation costs, indicating a trade-off between efficiency and sustainability in net-zero pathways.

Synopsis: This study examines the long-term remineralization of sediment organic carbon (OC) in coastal habitats—specifically seagrasses (Zostera noltei and Cymodocea nodosa), macroalgae (Caulerpa prolifera), and unvegetated sediment—after disturbance. The results show that sediment OC from Z. noltei and unvegetated areas was fully remineralized to CO2 within one year, while 42% and 46% of OC remained in C. nodosa and C. prolifera sediments, respectively. POC remineralization released significant amounts of both labile and recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (DOC) with low photo-reactivity. The findings highlight the need to consider smaller macrophyte species in management and restoration efforts due to their rapid remineralization potential after disturbance.

New organization to measure whether companies’ carbon removal plans actually work | Marketplace

"Carbon removal is exactly what it sounds like: taking planet-warming carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and storing it away in plants, or soil or the ocean. It might sound cool, but right now there isn’t a great way to prove that a company’s ambitious carbon removal plans will actually work.
This is where the Carbon Removal Standards Initiative comes in. It’s a new nonprofit that just launched in the U.S. this week.
The environmental argument for carbon removal is straightforward: fewer greenhouse gasses in the air means the planet warms less.
The economic argument is … well … “there’s really no natural market for it,” said Anu Khan, the founder and executive director of the Carbon Removal Standards Initiative. “We do it because it has a benefit to the climate and to the public.”

SB 308: Unpacking California's Latest Carbon Removal Bill | Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal

California has adopted a suite of world-leading emissions reductions policies and programs. However, its recent net-zero mandate highlighted a clear role for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) to provide up to 15% of the total mitigation needed to achieve this goal. SB 308 (Becker) is a bill currently moving through the state Legislature that would establish the regulatory framework and foundation to achieve this CDR target. Its key provisions would require separate mandates for carbon emissions reductions and carbon dioxide removal and to “ensure the state achieves carbon dioxide removals equivalent to at least 100% of statewide greenhouse gas emissions in calendar year 2045, and all subsequent years, in order to achieve the net zero and net negative greenhouse gas emissions goals.
