Invest-NL invests in SCW Systems for further scaling up

Invest-NL is entering as a shareholder of SCW Systems (‘SCW’) with a committed amount of €15 million. The innovative Dutch company SCW is developing two technologies that contribute to the energy transition and a circular economy. Together with SCW and the existing shareholder PGGM, this creates a strong consortium to scale up the revolutionary technologies.

SCW has developed an innovative 'Supercritical Water Gasification' technology over the past decade. Organic residual flows are converted under high temperature and high pressure into green hydrogen and green gas – a sustainable alternative to natural gas. At the demo location, SCW and its partner Gasunie are currently building an industrial installation with an initial capacity of 18.6 MW. This is the world's first supercritical water gasification plant. Invest-NL's investment paves the way for further scaling up to 100 MW.

In parallel, SCW is developing its 'CO2 CLEANUP' process. CO2 is permanently captured and converted into useful raw materials, for example as for sustainable cement. This process is currently being tested on a modest scale. In the event of a successful pilot, this investment will allow direct action to be taken to an industrial demonstration factory.

The consortium of SCW, PGGM and Invest-NL has a concrete long-term strategy, which is supported by Gasunie. The aim is to eventually produce half a billion cubic meters of green gas at various locations in the Netherlands. Permanently capturing the CO2 released during the gasification process in useful raw materials creates a unique chain for the first time: producing energy from residual and waste flows and at the same time partially reversing global warming by removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

Gerard Essing - founder and CEO of SCW - is therefore looking forward to the upcoming collaboration: “We are very pleased with Invest-NL joining as a shareholder. Invest-NL is willing to take risks and invests with a long-term vision. Invest-NL has proved to be a critical but also very constructive partner during the investment process. This gives confidence for our long-term partnership.”

Wouter Bos – CEO of Invest-NL - sees the investment as a perfect fit within Invest-NL's strategic goals: “SCW is an innovative and capital-intensive scale-up active in the energy and climate transition. In view of the high technology risk in combination with the high capital requirement, we can play a nice additional role here for regular investors.”

In the coming years, Invest-NL will form a strong consortium together with the other shareholder PGGM. Sjoerd van Krimpen – Investment Director Infrastructure at PGGM – sees the participation as a clear added value: “SCW's two technologies are at the starting point of a large-scale rollout. Because Invest-NL comes on board in this phase, it distinguishes itself and is therefore a valuable strategic partner. The PGGM Private Equity team committed itself to SCW Systems in 2019 because of the potential of the new technology for the Dutch energy transition. This fits in with our strategy of sustainable value creation, where financial returns will coincide with positive social impact.”
