as good as the best bug removers, but not perfect and expensive
By Paul Christensen
Let me start by saying I'm a fan of the Griot's Garage product line. Most of their products (especially their Speed Shine and Paint Cleaning Clay) are the best-in-the-business and especially good value.
That being said, I was pleased with the results of the Griot's Garage Bug and Smudge Remover - but I wasn't blown away. It's far better than most bug removers (Turtle Wax, etc) and really does remove a good portion (not all) of the bugs and tar without hurting your car's clear coat finish. And it has a pleasant, barely-there odor that won't overpower you.
But the Griot's Bug and Smudge remover was no more effective than my go-to bug remover, Lifter1 spray, which is an aerosol can that provides a finer mist (less liquid). And, the Lifter1 is a fraction of the cost of the Griot's Bug and Smudge remover. For the price of Griot's 22oz, I can buy more than three 16-oz cans of Lifter1.

A premium product
By Wayne
Griot's makes a line of premium auto care products targeted to the "perfectionist." Cleaning off bugs isn't necessarily the goal of only perfectionists but is a task for typical car owners too. There are bargain brand cleaners in any auto supply stores but they don't work as well, and might smell of ammonia. Griot's tells you to spray this on and wait 30 seconds. You really do need to wait 30 seconds, after which most bugs and crud will wipe off with a single wipe. You don't need to and aren't supposed to bear down on the cloth so there's no risk of scratching the paint. And their typical customer wouldn't tolerate even fine surface imperfections.
The bottle has an easy to use trigger and nozzle with either stream or broad spraying. I can't think of a case for using the stream since it's designed to be wiped from flat surfaces and a quick spray of the stream will be enough to make the product drip off the car. Nevertheless it's a good quality sprayer that takes little effort.
Despite its excellent job, I found that it won't get 100% of bugs and smudges. It will get virtually all, but for some reason there are certain ones that will remain after minor wiping. You can ignore the instructions and bear down when wiping to get these out, you could leave the occasional spec as "close enough," knowing that you'll just end up with bugs when you drive again, or you could try something like Griot's Garage 11145 Paint Cleaning Clay Kit to perfect your job. The latter product isn't a simple spray and wipe solution, but will get every imperfection off your paint, except of course for chips, scrapes or scratched off paint.
This product is more convenient than their Clay kit and you are more likely to get the bottle out for quick jobs.

Works without Messing up my Paint Job
By W. Sanders
Last winter I found my car's door with some kind of white sticky goop on it--it could have been from a cast. On another part of my car, I had tried to remove some spots using a clay-like cleaner from Zymöl--it made it look worse. So I was wary about using a Griot's Garage Bug & Smudge remover. I had used their "car wash" spray, and while it removed the dirt from around the gummed up area, it did not remove the gummy substance.
Griot's Garage Bug & Smudge remover did remove the smudge and beneath it I found a small dent caused by someone slamming their door open against mine. However, it took several sprays and rubs to get it off. That's ok because a stronger cleaner may have damaged my paint job like that Zymöl clay did. This stuff got the smudge off without hurting the paint at all. Same with bird poop--except the bird poop came off easier.
The spray bottle is easy to use and doesn't drip all over the place like some of these bottle do. That about all I can say--it works and it doesn't hurt the paint.
