The CVI/AAC Framework: A Complementary Approach to AAC Assessment for Individuals with CVI

Session Overview
This session introduces the CVI/AAC Framework as a complementary approach to traditional AAC assessment for individuals with CVI. Attendees will learn about the framework’s three primary domains: individual characteristics, communication partner responsibilities, and AAC system design. Participants will also explore how teams can use these domains to guide ongoing data collection and decision-making over time.
Target Audience
AAC Specialists, SLPs, OTs, AT Specialists, and Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
  • State the three domains of the CVI/AAC Framework
  • Describe two types of visual engagement data they could collect to support decision-making about aided AAC system design choices
  • Identify CVI-friendly modifications made to popular aided AAC systems such as Grid by Smartbox and Proloquo2Go
