Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life is a 2021 self-help book by Canadian clinical psychologist, YouTube personality, and psychology professor Jordan Peterson, as a sequel to his 2018 book 12 Rules for Life.[1][2][3][4][5]

Peterson's original interest in writing his last book, 12 Rules for Life, grew out of a personal hobby of answering questions posted on Quora; one such question being, "What are the most valuable things everyone should know?", to which his answer comprised 42 rules.[6][7]

Essentially psychological in their intention, the rules in both books are told using particular episodes of Peterson's clinical experience. Moreover, Peterson has stated that these rules were "explicitly formulated to aid in the development of the individual," though they may also prove useful at "levels of social organisation that incorporate the individual."[8]

Peterson states that both books are predicated on the notion that chaos and order are "the two fundamental elements of reality", and that "people find meaning in optimally balancing them". The difference between the two books, according to Peterson, is that the first focuses "more on the dangers of an excess of chaos", while the second is more concerned "with the dangers of too much structure". Peterson says that 12 Rules "argues for the merits of a more conservative view of the world" while Beyond Order "argues for the merits of a more liberal view".[8]

While Peterson was writing the book, his wife was diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer, though she recovered. Additionally, drug treatments for his depression led to a benzodiazepine dependence for which he was treated in Russian and Serbian rehab facilities with ketamine and an induced coma. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, his daughter reported that he had contracted COVID-19.[9][10]

In November 2020, shortly after the book's announcement, multiple staff at the Canadian division of Penguin Random House protested against the publication of the book. At least 70 anonymous messages were made to the publisher's diversity and inclusion committee, with "a couple" in favour of publishing.[11] Beyond Order was subsequently released in March 2021.[12]

James Marriott of The Times wrote about the book: "Ideas that flit and glimmer in Peterson's videos look bloated and dead when strapped to the page." Believing Peterson to be famous for his personality rather than his "bonkers" philosophy, Marriott said that Peterson "may have mistaken his personality for a philosophical system", and said Peterson's Harry Potter analysis contained the "most entertaining absurdities" of the book.[10]

Andrew Anthony of The Guardian wrote: "Viewed in the most favourable light, Peterson's rules are an attempt to locate people within society, to acknowledge the systems and structures that have long existed and, instead of seeking to tear them down, encourage his readers to find their most functional position within them". Anthony criticised that "The problem arises when his ragbag of common sense dictums ... are taken themselves to be a kind of gospel."[14]

On the other hand, Larissa Nolan of Irish Independent called it "a psychology book on another plane, a self-help book de profundis, from a beautiful mind. That he wrote it during the greatest crisis of his life is a testament to the power of what he preaches."[15]

In The Atlantic, Helen Lewis commented that Peterson's popularity is because of, not in spite of, "his contradictions and human frailties". Lewis wrote: "he is one of notably few prominent figures willing to confront the most fundamental questions of existence ... He doesn't offer get-rich-quick schemes, or pickup techniques. He is not libertine or libertarian. He promises that life is a struggle, but that it is ultimately worthwhile."[16]

Suzanne Moore of The Telegraph rated the book four out of five stars, saying that Peterson is "at his best when telling stories of his clinical practice" and finding the book, like its predecessor, "hokey wisdom combined with good advice". Moore also said that there was "not much here for women at all" nor any "real analysis of how power operates", and that "the rules are really nothing to argue about".[9]

Beyond Order has been criticized by literary critics for the way that it portrayed their reviews on the book's back cover. On a social media post, James Marriott, who had called Peterson's philosophy "bonkers" on several occasions, shared a photo of the back cover of the book, which quoted him describing the book as "a philosophy of the meaning of life". He referred to the book's use of his words as "amusing". On another occasion, New Statesman writer Johanna Thomas-Corr described the complimentary portrayal of her review in the book as "horrifying" and a "gross misrepresentaion".[17][18]

Rules let you handle email messages automatically based on a variety of different criteria. For example, you can move all messages from someone into a folder, or immediately delete all messages from a pesky online shopping site.

Sometimes, you might set up several rules that could apply to a single message. If you created a rule to move all messages with a subject line of "Wedding plans" to a folder, for example, and then created another rule to delete all messages with attachments, you probably wouldn't want a message related to wedding plans that has an attachment to be deleted. To prevent this from happening, you can set the option Stop processing more rules on the first rule.

In this example, the Wedding planner rule moves any email message from Jasmin Wolfe to the Wedding folder except if the message is marked Importance High. Stop processing more rules is selected, so no additional processing will occur.

The rule has a condition that the server cannot process. The action 'stop processing more rules' will prevent all remaining server rules from being carried out. Are you sure this is what you want to do?

I did some research and it looks like a lot of the times the issue is that rules have and stop processing more rules as part of them. I checked and literally every one of my rules have this condition.

The issue, however, is that there is no way to remove this condition. Doing research, the and stop processing more rules condition should be listed as one of them to check when adding/editing a rule and in all screenshots I could find it is the first one on the list. However, it is not included anywhere on the list. Please see the screenshots of the Edit Rules Window below:

How do I remove this part of the rule if it's not included in the list? As mentioned this is part of every rule I create and I have 20-30 of them, so as of now it's impossible for me to have more than one rule run automatically for incoming e-mails.

I think what that means is that no other rules will be applied to any given email. So every new message will check it self against all the custom rules but once one rule does apply then it will stop trying the remaining rules for that particular email. I don't think it means that no other emails will have the rules run against them.

The meaning of the "and stop processing more rules" action is, "and stop processing more rules ON THIS MESSAGE". You are correct that it is not very clear exactly what that action means. Microsoft could and should change the wording to be more precise.

Yes, you have to click Next and remove the tick "stop processing more rules" at the top. And then click Finish. My problem by not doing this is that when a rule has been applied to a mail from a certain person, the next time you get a mail from the same person, the rule doesn't apply, which might be a bug in Outlook 2013, or dumb programming. So every time you are creating a rule, you have to go through this procedure or your rules will only work once.

I have Outlook 2013. It appears that this option is set as a default. I kept loosing the functionality of my rules, and kept executing clean rules and creating the rules again. I never looked at the setting on the second dialog box. And I don't recall this as a default in 2007 nor 2010.

Turns out that if a client-side rule has the "Stop processing more rules" command, then any following server-side rules are not executed - I guess because the server gets the message first and doesn't know whether the client-side rules will be triggered, so it assumes that it will.

Thanks for the suggestion @Giyomu.
I hear this frustration a lot from some clients of mine, but I must say, after explaining the other features included in the Business plan, they usually upgrade to have access to the rules and to all the other features as well. That would be my first option. If this is not an option, try Flowsana or Zapier or some of the other automation integrations,

I agree, this is totaly unpleasant - Rules that are available on Premium almost useless for my use case. Most of rules I need is in Business plan, and price difference is huge (for whole company).
From my perspective - Rules feature in Premium plan looks like trial. This limitation is ridiculous. ClickUp made this more progressive.

What I found utterly confusing is the differentiation with regards to rules: I think this is a very powerful feature. Unfortunately I now found out that I am limited to some prebaked rules, that do not fit my custom workflow. That is underwhelming, I just invested 300 $ to have a great tool for self organization and now one of the best features is limited to an unusable extend.

Official description in microsoft blog : This is an action for the rule, but it looks like a property in the EAC. You can choose to stop applying additional rules to a message after a rule processes a message. For more details: Mail flow rule properties

It usually is intended to prevent duplication of emails via a move action
when multiple move rules could apply to a single message.
