Dear all,

We are having an outreach meeting tomorrow at 7pm in the VCC cafeteria. The plan is to have enough material by the weekend to start postering and leafleting. Please do come by if you would like to help out. We are going to need bodies over the weekend to go around and promote the rally and it'd be great if we could have a meeting to figure out the logistics for that.

For the people on the CAPP Vancouver mailing list who are just tuning in, this is in preparation for the July 17 rally, the main purpose of which is to demand a transparent and comprehensive public inquiry into the abuses that occurred during the G20 Summit on the streets of Toronto. If you would like to help out in any way, please join the capp-vancouver-g20 Google group.

I will try but I may not be able to meet tonight.  A couple of notes:

Alex Neve, Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada is a friend from my days in Toronto, years ago.  I tried the longshot of asking him to speak, which didn’t fly.  However he asked the local rep Don Wright, and he has agreed to speak for five minutes on behalf of Amnesty.  Question – if this becomes a march rather than a static protest will we still be able to have guest speakers?

I am still up for producing and donating a banner.  I suggest using a variation of the attached logo (from the Facebook page), which we will clean up for large format printing.   However it does not include the actual full name of the organization, which I suggest would be a good addition.  We can make that addition with the group’s approval.  I am fine to make something up to 5’ x 20’ although you may want to go a little smaller so it is useful indoors and easier to wrangle.

Re Paul Cech’s email on the VPD – I can see why they would prefer the march to a sit in on the street.  Have all the other static locations been ruled out?  Personally I would prefer to see us at Victory Square than marching.

Re the Black Bloc:  To be they are not welcome, although our ability to control this is limited.   I would suggest we plan a chant to use if people show up in balaclavas– something along the lines of Canada is Free, Show Your Faces.  Any action more aggressive than that would be up to the police.

Correction to my previous email -- The last point regarding the Black bloc should begin with the words “To me they are not welcome”, not “To be….”

Thanks Paul, both for getting us a speaker and offering to donate a banner: this is really awesome.

Tonight, we're probably going to discuss our strategy for dealing with the appearance of the black bloc at the rally. We do have some people working with us who are reluctant to denounce the black bloc and of course others who are not very favourably disposed toward them (to say the least), and this requires a serious and honest discussion. It would be good if you could be there to put forward your views, but if you couldn't make it, that's OK.

As for the rally, personally I would prefer a march, but that's just me, and unlike the PMO we decide things democratically :)

sorry i can't make it tonight but looking forward to connecting soon. just an update  - i've been in touch with the admin of the main G20 public inquiry page on facebook, and i'm hoping he'll make me an admin so we can coordinate the social media outreach across the country.

i'll also start doing more work to promote it once we have the details settled.

Hello there,

Just a quick note to mention that if we want to film the rally, it would be useful to have some period of time that is 'static'/in one location-I'm assuming this would be the case if we have a speaker. Just thought I'd mention this for consideration in terms of determining the location/sit in/march.

I have put the call out to the "film crew" and am waiting to hear back. Regardless, I will be there to film the event at least from my camera and I can edit it this summer.

Take care, hope all goes well this evening/weekend. I'll be away for the weekend, but I have time next week to help with postering/leafletting if there are areas of Van in need. Ashley, if you need help calling/inviting organizations, I'm also happy to help with that.

Take care, Shari

Hello all,

Apologies for not making the meeting tonight, I decided not to attend as I am not officially part of the outreach committee, and I'm not available this weekend to help with outreach.

Re: the black bloc. I would like to see some marshals at the demo who can deal with a blac bloc presense should there be one -- Strong folks who can ask the black bloc to leave, and who can be prepared to help deal with resistance on the part of black bloc folks if such should occur. That said, its entirely possible that there will not be a black bloc presence at the rally on the 17th.

My other preference would be that the issue of the black bloc or "violence" not come up from any speakers at the rally. Our job is to call for a public inquiry into what was essentially a police riot in Toronto on the weekend of the 26-27 of June, not to take a public position on the black bloc.

Tim

Hey Tim,

We did discuss this issue tonight. Our resolution was to not mention the Black Bloc by name, or refer to any past violent activity. We will ask the emcee to 'invite anyone that shows up wearing a mask or bandanna to take your masks off, as people new to political action may find you intimidating'. This is in keeping with CAPP's message of advocating political participation in a multi partisan environment.

Cheers,

Paul C
