Hi All,
If you're cooped up by Covid, we have a wonderful volunteer initiative you might want to get involved in. We need one or two people who'd be willing to set up meetings - and gather more volunteers - to work on the following:
FOOD RESCUE in Albany (and beyond):
I have been working with Sonny, the recycling specialist at DGS, to establish a relationship with Food Pantries of the Capital District and the Food Rescue Alliance. We'd like to start small with some food rescue initiatives. This means hooking up with a few grocery stores that are throwing away perfectly good food and getting that food to pantries, soup kitchens and other organizations that can use it. We are discussing becoming a member of the Food Rescue Alliance ($50-100 membership fee) and having access to their Food Rescue web application "The Robot." The Robot allows us to input the names of donor and receiving organizations, and get volunteers to transport the food. This effort can start with as little as one pick up, one day a week. Food Pantries of the Capital District will help us find which stores to pick up from.
Rescuing food is a win/win all around: we provide food to people who need it and reduce both landfill waste and methane emissions!!! Plus there are many grants available for initiatives that reduce food waste,. This effort is especially crucial during Covid-19 when many people are economically stressed and approaching food pantries in record numbers.
Send me an email (
