Hi all,

Yeesh, forgive my double posting in the other thread - that is what I
get for trying to access our group while on the road. <facepalm>

Anyway, I have a bunch of fun stuff from NASA to pass out (glasses,
commemorative posters, etc.) so, I just want to get a sense of how
many of you are confirmed to support the event.

So far, I think we are:

Tony Begg
Alan Eckert
Brad Jones
Francois-Marie Patorni
and me

In addition to my NASA things, I have solar funneled scopes, a PST and
a Sunwatcher to complement whatever you all are bringing along.

Clear skies,

HI Stephen and Alan,

Thanks for your replies and the reminder. I have the program start at
3PM. So, if people can arrive a bit earlier for set-up that would be
good.

The earliest I can leave town is 3:00 and I will need to be back in town by 7:00. Is there still viewing and assistance to be had/given by my presence?

Best,

Dear Peter

I have a second mount this time (Vixen Porta II) for the Lunt so won't need your spare. Thanks!

Best Wishes

HI Stephen,

Yes. I have more scopes and viewers than I can manage solo. So, if you
want to 'adopt' one for the time you are here, great. My personal PST
from the department of redundency department will be here. Perhaps you
and Jasper can work it.

Tony - brilliant, see you then.

I was looking back through the threads of previous CHSP events to find out where in the park The Usual viewing area actually resides. No luck. Peter, will there be signs up once you get into the park?

Dear Stephen

I have been there once and it is right near the car park at the entrance to the park.  (which is signposted in Cerrillos village off NM14 just this side of Madrid).

Best Wishes

Thank you to our club members Tony Begg, Stephen Bohannon, Alan Eckert, Jasper Lipscomb, Francois-Marie Patorni and Ulysses Yarborough for their support at the transit of Venus event yesterday. Perhaps you have seen Staci Matlock's piece on it in today's Santa Fe New Mexican?

Well done CCAC!

how was viewing at St. John's?

Thanks, F-M.  This is terrific; I shared it on my Facebook page.  For some strange reason, my computer won't display the explanations, but I take it that the various videos were made in many wavelengths from visible to H-a to X-ray (and magnetic fields?) to yield different pictures of what was going on during the transit.

Here are some photos made by Joey Reich through my scope, Tony's, and one of the H-a scopes. Considering we weren't set up for astrophotography and Joey was using a point-and-shoot, these are pretty fine. A lot better than I was getting through my iPhone, anyway!

I tried sending these directly from Flickr, but they don't seem to be showing up. If they do, sorry for the duplication.

Very nice F-M.  I shared on my FB page too (with credits to you).

And Alan, quite good shots.

I went to the St. John's event Bill Donahue had set up.  Good views there too.  The Science Lab rooftop is an ideal location for things like this.  [Even has a big tree (off to the side) for shade. <G>]

Dear BCJ

If you are watching that amazing NASA video it was accompanied by the following text:

Launched on Feb. 11, 2010, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun. During its five-year mission, it will examine the sun's atmosphere, magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth's atmospheric chemistry and climate.  SDO provides images with resolution 8 times better than high-definition television and returns more than a terabyte of data each day.

On June 5 2012, SDO collected images of the rarest predictable solar event--the transit of Venus across the face of the sun.  This event happens in pairs eight years apart that are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years.  The last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117.

The videos and images displayed here are constructed from several wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light and a portion of the visible spectrum.  The red colored sun is the 304 angstrom ultraviolet, the golden colored sun is 171 angstrom, the magenta sun is 1700 angstrom, and the orange sun is filtered visible light.  304 and 171 show the atmosphere of the sun, which does not appear in the visible part of the spectrum.

Best Wishes

Tony Begg
