HI all,

I have two requests related to the annular eclipse May 20th. One is a
roadtrip location and the other is at Bandelier.

a) For NM State Parks I am holding an event at Bluewater Lake State Park
(28 miles west of Grants) I plan to spend the night and could probably
get sites reserved for you.

b) Bandelier is planning an event at their Firetower and would like to
have support from local astronomers for the eclipse and then some
stargazing afterward.

Let me know if you are interested in either event and I will share
contact info with you.

Clear skies,

Dear Peter

Is there a closer town to Bluewater Lake than Grants that might have a motel or is Grants it?

I plan to join you there.

Best Wishes

Tony

Dear Tony

Bluewater Lake is for the annular solar eclipse on May 20th.  Cerrillos Hills is for the Venus transit on June 5th.  Peter sent out both invites today.

Best Wishes

Will let you know.   I had half planned to take a run down to Abq and go out just south of the airport on the center of the eclipse track.

Ooops,  Guess I wasn't paying attention.  Thanks for clarifiying the two events Tony.  I've been working long hours on a commercial shoot past few days and must be a bit bleary eyed.

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Tony,

Grants is the nearest town with lodging. But Trish Jacoby has a fun
little set-up with cabin rentals just outside the Bluewater Lake State
Park entrance.

Dear Peter

I contacted Trish as soon as I got your message and I have a cabin booked.

I am bringing two solar-capable scopes to Bluewater Lake SP (God willing), a 5 inch apo refractor with Baader Planetarium solar filter (in a Kendrick mount) and a Lunt 35mm Hydrogen alpha scope. Trouble is I only have one mount (CG5GT). Both telescopes have Vixen bars for mounting. The Lunt is not heavy so any kind of mount that takes a Vixen bar would do. If you, or someone else coming can bring a spare mount we would have an extra telescope for the outreach.

Best Wishes and Good Luck for clear skies tomorrow everyone

Hi Tony,

I plan to arrive at Bluewater between 3:30PM - 4PM tomorrow. Stephen
Bohannon and some friends are also joining us it looks like. I will have
2 solar funneled scopes and a PST for Ha viewing.

Let me look into this other mount dealio, I'll see what I can scrounge
up. Would a couple of hose clamps on a video head atop a Bogen tripod be OK?

Tony,

What is the tube diameter on the 35mm Lunt?

I'm planning to set up on the curve of University Blvd, just south of Eclipse Aviation.  I'm hoping i dont fry a video camera and will be in a welding helmet.  That spot is right on the center line.  Wish me luck and that i dont go blind.

Dear Peter

Sorry - had an early night for a change. We have to clear 8.5 cm at the objective lens end due to the etalon, but the tube itself is 6 cm diameter. I have it attached to the Vixen bar with nice big ADM rings so should be able to extract easily (looking again they might not clear the etalon - which means take off the Televue sol finder and extract the other end). I have ADM clamp blocks attached to the rings which could clamp to something flat (currently attached to a male-to-male Vixen bar arrangement). In fact I also have a something flat - that little Vixen bar that comes with the CG5GT that has a tapped hole for a camera tripod. I have a bolt for that with about 3/16 inch to spare (and the hex key). So we perhaps have several options. Sorry this is a hassle - I should have gotten another mount (like that Vixen alt-az that sells for $200) but am saving up to buy a spiffier alt-az.

What a great eclipse!

Peter, sorry I didn't make it out to Bluewater. After a weekend of moving rocks south of El Malpais, my crew was not interested in traveling an hour in the wrong direction from home. We watched at a friend's house in Abq and had fun with minimal equipment (old filmstrips and eclipse viewing glasses). I hope your event went well and looking forward to joining up for the transit of Venus?

Best,

Stephen Bohannon
