Last week Daniel asked about my non skid paint. Careful masking and application of this textured paint can really finish a boat off nicely. The first 2 pictures show the finish on Sealion. The next picture shows the non skid finish on my other boat after 8 years of use. I have included the last picture as I know when building it is easy to loose sight of the end goal.⛵
Sealion is painted in 2 pack paint and the finish is sprayed, but you can achieve a good finish with practice with a roller and finishing with a brush. My non skid is sprayed with a 2.4mm nozzle, but I have achieved a nice finish with a roller as well. I use a foam or short nap mohair roller. With the addictive mixed into the paint practice on some scraps to get the finish you're happy with. If you are not happy with the first coat don't work it too much, but apply another coat when the first one is almost dry. Remove the masking tape soon after so you end up with crisp lines. My only suggestion would be to not break the non skid up into smaller sections with shiny paint in between. This can look good but the shiny strips are slippery. I prefer 2 pack paint for durability, if using enamel paint the non skid will wear off a little quicker, but can easily be re applied down the track.
Because we don't need to leave the cockpit when sailing the CH21 the finish need not be too agressive, and I find my finish a good compromise between grip and being able to keep the deck clean. Ron
