Here is where I am in the construction of JOELAN. I gave the second layer of epoxy on the hull. Next week will be a few layers of Interprotect 2000E and then it will be painting. Here is my color pattern.

In Quebec, we have to change the tires on our cars to put on winter tires. I made an arrangement with a mechanic who gives me rim weights in exchange for a crate of beer. I already have several hundred pounds of accumulated.

I need advice on how to melt and cast the lead for the internal ballast. In my opinion, the heat can melt the epoxy. So??

Here is my shop.

Hi Andre,
The plans call for lead shot mixed with resin for the ballast. I had not used this method before and it is a great way to secure the ballast in place. Wheel weights are fairly small and I'm sure that you could use this method as well. You can't melt them in place and would have to make individual moulds for every compartment. I put a layer of fibreglass on the bottom of the compartments where the lead was to go first, and the plans then call for some fibreglass over the top of the lead resin mix.The wheel weights have some metal on them also, but I wouldn't worry about it because you will completely encapsulate it in resin. The wheel weights won't pack in as tightly as the lead shot and you might be a little under weight but most likely not by much . Once you launch you can always trim the boat to her lines with a bit of extra lead if needed. Just make sure these extra pieces are securely fastened in place. I have some pictures of my ballast installation and will try and find them over the weekend. I see you use the same currency in Canada as we use in Australia... Beer!

Here are the photos. This is after the resin had been mixed through.
