I spent some more time using the tiller pilot this weekend. Much better conditions to test it with a steady breeze just below 10 knots. I used it for about 2 hours and it steered Sealion very well. It is important to trim the boat well, especially with regard to weather helm, and also not to press the boat too hard otherwise the pilot will struggle to keep the boat on course. I was surprised how well the pilot steered down wind, but the sea was pretty flat. The photo was taken standing in the anchor well, and it was great to sit on the bow for a while. I am sure it will be very handy especially on longer trips. It allowed me to more easily go below to prepare some food and coffee while underway. Ron

Hi Ron
Sorry this is nothing to do with tiller pilots. Just looking at the photo of Sealion that you included with your post and wondering what you used on the deck to increase grip. Are you happy with it? Is looks good.

Hi Daniel,
I use a non slip additive by International paints. It is mixed with the paint, or can be sprinkled on the wet paint. I find you can get a better finish mixing it with the paint as it is easier to control the texture rather than sprinkling it on, I sprayed my non slip but it takes a special nozzle and some practice. You can get a good finish mixing it in with the paint and rolling it on. Practice on some scraps until you get the texture you're happy with, I use disposable foam rollers. The longest part of the job is masking up! I will take some more pictures of the non slip finish in the next few days and post them in the building section. I have found some timber for your mast and will get back to you. I am expecting it next week and want to have a look at it first.
Cheers Ron
