What are some good sources for straight grain Douglas Fir for the strings and mast in the states? I tried locally (Birmingham, AL) and no one here has it.Thanks

Good quality Douglas fir seems to be difficult to source everywhere. Here in Australia I have a timber merchant who will put asside suitable pieces when they are cutting up larger flitches. You may be able to find someone locally who might be prepared to do the same. If you say it is for a boat mast they can sometimes be more interested. Spar grade fir should have at least 12growth rings per inch. One thing you might like to consider is to run some conduit up your mast during assembly. This makes it easy to pull wires through later for lights. I also have wind instruments on 'Sealion' with the sensor at the top of the mast, but the wireless ones are becoming cheaper now. The photo shows my masy under construction and also another one I jave built for another CH21 builder. Cheers Ron

Sorry for the doubling up of photos and bad spelling, fat fingers-small phone! I also meant to add that the mast only weighs 20kg and I don't have any problem raising and lowering it myself. Ron
