Great idea. This will be a great resource for others who follow. I found it really helpful to be able to see other people’s photos of each stage of the build.

Thanks for posting the gallery. How much space are you working in? i am contemplating building the cape Henry for myself. I only have a 2 car garage to work in however.

Jack S, what are the internal dimensions of your garage? One large double door or two single doors? A few CH21s have been built in double garages but I can confirm if I have the dimensions.

My garage is two car, with full two-wide door, its 20 ft deep and 19 ft wide, and about 79 inches of vertical space to get anything out of the doors.

I am thinking if I build it on an angle like 30 to 45 degrees i can fit it in, as ill need to be able to close the garage each night. and after getting your study pack i figure the hull will be about 5.5 ft tall am i right?, maybe an extra ft for the jig.

I'm novice, so ill be watching this group and others closely. I'm currently finishing up my first boat build, from CLC, the jimmy skiff 2, fun starter project to get my ft wet, but not what i REALLY want for the lake here where i live.

Hello Jack,
I built my Cape Henry 'Sealion' at home in a shed a bit narrower than yours. I have another shed joined on to one end to give me extra length, but an option for you if you have the room, could be to open the doors and use them as the side walls with a temporary end wall and a temporary roof. I had to do this once I had the boat on the trailer but didn't take any photos. I used tinted acrylic sheeting for the roof which also gave me some extra natural light. If you look at the photos in the Dudley Dix Design section of my website, the early pictures will show the room I had available. www.stainlessboatworks.com.au  If you have limited room the build will be easier if you plan ahead a little. If working from a kit this is not so much of an issue, but if working from plans it is worthwhile to buy the full size patterns and cut the planks and some of the larger pieces before setting up the building frame while you have some room. I hope this helps, It is worthwhile looking into as I and every other owner I have been in contact with absolutely love their Cape Henry's.

Here is a diagram that I drew years ago for someone who asked about fitting the CH21 into a 20x20ft garage. You can gain more space for cutting boards and/or table saw etc on one side by pushing the bow a bit further into the corner and turning the stern to one side or the other.

Maximum height is 1585mm (63") without cradle. You have space to build. Pull her out to turn over and push it back in to build the deck. Pull it out again to load onto the trailer.

Thank you Dudley and Ron for the replies and advice.

Looks like on a 45° like that it will fit just fine. perhaps I can plan to start next summer, maybe with the mast, and I'll be working from a pre-cut plywood from CLC. 2 to 3 year project. Not sure about modifications, kinda like it how it is, but i'm sure to find something as it seems everyone else seem to modify one thing or another.

Wondering though Dudley if you know anyone on the central east coast or inland USA that has a CH21 that may be willing to get in contact with me, maybe I can see one in person before committing to the build? I'm just north of Charlotte NC myself, specifically Lake Norman area.

Thanks again

I think that the closest CH21 to you is Jim Mason with "Mehala" in Exmore on the Virginia Eastern Shore. I don't see his name or email address on the member list. Please send me an email and I will put you in touch with him. You can see my email address at https://dixdesign.com/email.htm.

Note that you cannot order a kit from CLC. They don't take orders on my kits and will refer you back to me. Place the kit order through my website and I sub-contract the cutting to CLC
