Nice Job Andre. My mast weighs 22kg with all fittings and no problem to raise by myself. Looks like you have a nice workshop there, I find it makes the job much more enjoyable in a nice space. Ron

I've never weighed our mast for Elvee.  With all the gear and lines attached it wold be difficult to raise alone, mostly because of the step up to the cabin roof.  Very awkward.  Nice job.  Rye.

Tout le monde - I'd like some advice on building the mast. I see André built a 21' single length mast. Has anyone built a mast with two components as suggested in Drawing #2, and, if so, could they give me some guidance? My uncertainty is about ways to join the shorter upper section to the lower section. My present thought is to make the upper section long enough to be fitted inside the top of the lower section. Thanks in advance for any advice.  Cy Jordan

Hi Cyrus, It was never my intention that the mast be in two pieces. I have looked at Drawing 2 and don't find where you see a suggestion that it be in two pieces. There are two mast sections on the left side of the drawing, the larger one applying to the mast between the deck and the hounds. Above that it tapers to the smaller section, applying at the masthead. The right side of the drawing you can see where it must be hollow and where it must be solid. If you build the upper section separately to the smaller section and slide it into the top of the larger section you will split the mast due to headstay and peak halliard loads.

Taper all of the staves to reduce them from the 43mm width down to the 32mm width shown, for the length from hounds to masthead, before cutting the birdsmouth V. When you glue the mast it will pull the staves together to form the taper.
