Howdy Bailey http://www.howdybailey.com/ of Norfolk. Virginia, US, built a rudder for me.  He and I want to know how others approached attaching their tiller to their rudder.  Thanks,  Cy Jordan

I have basically built mine to plan, with provision for a flag as well. Will be launching Sealion in 2 weeks on Dec 23. Just finishing engine installation and wiring/ electronics. Will post some more pics over the next few days.

Thanks,Ron. I was thinking about a Ss steel plate on either side of the tiller and a bolt through the rudder post allowing the tiller to swing up out of the cockpit - yours looks more robust than my idea.

I guess it depends on what kind of sailing you plan to do. I don't like any play in my rudders. As to wether it might be in the way at anchor, I'll let you know in a couple of weeks!

With Elvee we wanted to be able to have the tiller swing up for two reasons.  First, we sometimes stand on the seats when motoring into the mooring field for a better view over the bow, this makes it easier.  Second, it can be pushed up out of the way when the boom tent is rigged.  There is no play in the tiller, feels solid under a press of sail.

Seasons Greetings everyone. Your tiller solution on 'Elvee' looks good. Because I have built an aft deck and have a mainsheet traveller I can't pivot the tiller out of the way. I would have to hinge the actual tiller. I'll wait and see, it would be useful to have it out of the way at anchor.
I will be launching 'Sealion' on Sunday so will post some pictures next week. Happy Holidays,Ron.

My intention was that the rudder have a stainless steel strap over the top, through-bolted to the rudder. The tiller is pushed into the front of the strap and secured with a pin, so that it can be quickly removed to clear space when at anchor.

An alternative is to bolt the stainless strap to the tiller, leave out the forward bolt that secures it to the rudder and leave the aft bolt a bit loose. Round off the aft top corner of the rudder with the centre of the bolt as the centre for the radius. Now the tiller can be lifted up to get it out of the way.
