Keep Democracy ALIVE! OPPOSE SECTION 45! Hearing Wednesday, June 25

Governor Maura Healey's new energy bill, H.4144, would REPEAL the 1982 public referendum initiative which prohibits new nuclear power reactors in the state without voter approval. This action is a serious threat to the democratic process. That OUR governor plans to repeal a people's mandate citing the current 1982 referendum law as a 'major barrier' rather than a thoughtful public law which requires voter approval for new nuclear power in the state is unacceptable.

Governor Healey goes on to say about new nuclear power "that [it] COULD improve reliability" and "stabilize prices", two points we would like supporting evidence because, first, COULD is not WOULD, and second, small modular reactors do neither. Also, why not follow the law and go to the people and ask them as is the intent of the people's mandate?

 

This action is very undemocratic!

 

Coincidentally or not, Holtec is in the business of Small Modular Reactors with the possibility of citing one or more in Plymouth!

SMRs are not the answer to climate change concerns. SMRs still produce high level nuclear waste with no where to go, is very expensive, and remains a public and environmental threat. 

 

CALL TO ACTION:  We must oppose Section 45 of H.4144 and call for its removal.
