Dr. Peter Moyer, Hyannis Rotary program Thursday, July 10 12:00 noon

Hyannis Rotary Club is honored to host Dr. Peter Moyer as our speaker on Thursday, July 10 at our regular noon meeting at Alberto’s restaurant in Hyannis. APPC Newsletter readers and members of Cape Downwinders are invited to join us, via Zoom, for Dr. Moyer’s talk.

 Dr. Moyer is a specialist in the effects of radiation on human life and health. He is Professor and Chair Emeritus of Emergency Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine and former Medical Director of Boston Police, Fire and EMS, among many other notable roles. He earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, then graduated from Columbia Medical School and finally the Boston University School of Public Health.

 Dr. Moyer has a decades-long interest in nuclear reactors and nuclear war and their harm to human health. In the past year, he has been actively supporting Diane Turco and the Cape Downwinders in monitoring the closure of the Pilgrim Nuclear Plant, gaining in the process an understanding of the politics of nuclear plant decommissioning. 

 Dr. Moyer is a member of Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility and the Rotary Club of Brookline MA.

 The decommissioning of the Pilgrim Nuclear Plant remains a vitally important public issue. Holtec, the company that purchased the plant to oversee its decommissioning, proposed dumping radioactive wastewater into Cape Cod Bay. That plan was rejected but Holtec is appealing the ruling.
