Dear Colleagues,

Hope you are doing well.

We would like to invite you to a webinar conducted by the Bank Information Center on engaging and influencing the World Bank and Asian Development Bank on disability inclusion.

The presentation by the Bank Information Center will focus on two development finance institutions in the Asian region - the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. It will cover the following themes.

  • What are the World Bank and ADB?
  • How do they work (project cycle)?
  • What can go wrong? Addressing shortfalls
  • What is civil society’s role?
  • What are the openings to push for the World Bank and ADB to be more inclusive for persons with disabilities?

The overall aim of the session is to give more information on how to engage and influence these two institutions, specifically from a disability rights and inclusion perspective. The presentation will give an overview of the two banks, how they work and what their shortfalls are, the role of civil society and the openings to push for the two banks to be more inclusive for persons with disabilities.

While you or your organization may not directly work on monitoring projects funded by the World Bank or the ADB, engaging with these institutions and the projects they fund are important as stakeholders and members of civil society. Many of these projects have large infrastructure components and are part of a country’s public debt, therefore it is important that different groups engage in these processes and influence wherever possible to ensure inclusivity. For example, large-scale infrastructure projects that are not following universal design principles will not be accessible to public spaces or sites that are disability friendly and have a direct bearing on you as a citizen.

A partner of Sightsavers and BIC from Bangladesh will also share their experiences of engaging and influencing World Bank projects in their country, and how that benefited the entire project.

The webinar will take place on

Wednesday, July 12th at 11.30 BKK (10.30 am Bangladesh, 10 am India, 9.30 am Pakistan)

We look forward to engaging with you on this initiative.

best regards,
