ALCON,
Sharing the following information in the spirit of giving you the opportunity to see the training of awareness we are participating in during hurricane season.  This is annual training we do to insure comms, squadrons and members are safe.  This is the first of many emails I will receive to bring us through the crisis.  This specific email does not request my reporting at this time,  but explains why you may receive a call (as part of our real life training) to see if we can reach you for our head count.
Thank you for your support.
Sherry Stevens,  Capt.

ALCON,

The National Weather Center has upgraded Tropical Storm Mike to a Category 3 Hurricane after rapid intensification in the Caribbean over the past 12 hours.  Therefore, the following HURCON levels have been placed into effect by the Wing Commander.   Please review the required HURCON actions (you may simulate them for this exercise or actually perform them as you choose, there is no reporting requirement in the exercise) and execute them ASAP.   The Hurricane Annex is attached for your reference.

  Groups 1 & 3: HURCON IV
  Groups 2, 5, 6, 7: HURCON III

Hurricane Mike is currently forecast to cross the Florida Peninsula near Fort Lauderdale late Saturday evening.  More rapid intensification is expected as Mike is over very warm 30 degree Celsius waters and is forecast to remain in a low shear environment until landfall.   Mike is a very large storm, and the NHC has advised that damage can be expected over a wide area wherever Mike eventually makes landfall.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management has established Points of Distribution across the State and has asked us to prepare to staff and provide communications support to these locations.   Group Comm Officers should already be aware of these locations.

HF Net Control Stations should be prepared to operate a Wing HF net after the passage of Hurricane Mike and to relay Command and Control communications to and from VHF to maintain communications across all FLWG echelons and Commanders.   With a storm of this size and magnitude, we can expect widespread loss of conventional communications (telephone, cellular systems, and Internet) and potentially widespread loss of power.   Steps should be taken to safeguard CAP property from the impending storm.  (Consider: How would you safeguard radios, antennas, power supplies, etc from damage?  Do you have such a plan?)

Respectfully,

JOSEPH TOMASONE, Maj, CAP
Director of Communications (A6DC)
Florida Wing, Civil Air Patrol
