AEOs,
Lots of things going on...here are some updates that you should know about!
1. Maj Jacqui Sturgess has stepped down as NER DCS/AE. She has done a FABULOUS job over many years in NER, but she's busy as squadron commander of a unit in NYC. We'll miss you, Jacqui, but I'm sure you won't be able to keep away from AE too long! Maj Rob Reilly (
rei...@media.mit.edu) is our new NER DCS/AE, and is a fellow Massachusetts member. We're looking forward to working with Rob.
2. The AEO Academy (which was *originally* scheduled for July at Otis) is now tentatively scheduled for this fall at (get this!) the Intrepid Air/Sea/Space Museum in NYC. Look for more information in upcoming weeks.
3. I've attached a (I hope!) up-to-date listing of the AEOs. If information is incorrect or missing (missing items highlighted in yellow), please let me know ASAP and I'll update it.
4. What's going on with Yeager testing? We've only had 10 members who've taken the test this year. Please, please, PLEASE encourage your seniors to take this test!
5. Welcome to Capt Harrison (Harry) Ingraham, who is the new MAWG External AEO (ADY; he's also the AEO for Minute Man squadron). Harry has jumped on eagerly and has already initiated several ideas:
a. TopFlight (a.k.a. Fly-A-Teacher): tentatively scheduled for this fall; Harry is working with Andrew Buck (AEO from Beverly) and perhaps some others to bring this to fruition.
b. Aerospace Education Members (AEMs): Harry will be forwarding the names/contact info of AEMs to the squadron(s) closest to them. I'm asking the AEOs (and/or squadron commanders) to please follow up with these AEMs to help them out in their classrooms, or maybe even join your squadron!
c. Museum of Science: Harry and I are working with the MoS to have cadets (and possibly seniors) present hands-on AE activities a few times a year. Ideal types of activities would be similar to those in the AE Display contest at the MAWG Conference. In exchange, members would get free admission to the museum, plus possibly reduced-rate entry to things like Imax or the planetarium, plus possibly a telescope night if the weather cooperates.
d. Encouraging students: As part of the AEM and TopFlight program, Harry would like to provide a way for teachers to encourage their better students by providing an orientation flight. Not only will this help encourage students, but may also help us get new cadets! I will be following up with NHQ for permission (yes, Harry has already checked the regs -- if NHQ gives us the go-ahead, we can do it!).
e. Christa McAuliffe Challenger Center: Harry is working on ways we can help the Challenger Center, and how they could help us!
6. Capt Oscar Orringer (AEO from Cape Cod) has created a FANTASTIC set of Powerpoint slides that AEOs can use to teach the modules for the cadets. We're looking at putting the slides up on the MAWG website, but if you want a copy before then, please let me know and I'll send you a CD (too big to email!).
7. Speaking of the MAWG website, if anyone could help me out with getting the AE web pages (I have prototypes already set up) onto the MAWG website, I'd appreciate it!
8. By now you probably have received an invite for the MAWG AEO Google-Group. (I sent it out to those who are NOT already members.) I see several of you have already joined -- thank you! This group will provide us with a great way of exchanging ideas, activities, etc. Dave Druga has already used this list several times to send out AE current events that he has used at his squadron -- why should all of us have to cull multiple resources if we can borrow from others?
9. Last...I'm still looking for someone to step up to be MAWG Internal AEO. The responsibility would be to help AEOs with teaching cadets and seniors by providing material, ideas, etc. Remember, in order to be promoted to Major you must have shown that you are contributing to the Wing as a whole -- this is a great way! (You can be ADY to Wing; I'm not looking to necessarily raid squadrons for personnel to transfer!) Please let me know if you're interested. And if you'd like to handle only AE for cadets or AE for seniors, that's fine, too!
Look for more information on the above events in the next few weeks...
If there's anything I can do to help you at the squadrons, please let me know! Please take pride in all you do for CAP.
