i have downloaded the files using svn but what next? i'm not really an
expert in this kind of coding and i'm totally lost on what steps to
take next. the documentation is sparse to non-existent. any help
please?

You're right, there is very little documentation at this point. Have you already had a look at the HowToUse wiki page?

I don't have a pre-built distribution available, and the Makefile for building the examples is assumed to be running on Mac OS X, Linux, or another UNIX-like operating system. You might be able to build it on Windows in cygwin but I've never tried it.

It's the same for me, and the How To use only explain how to build canviz. I just want to use it into pages.

Thanks for your interest in Canviz. The "hello_world" example included in the download shows the basic way to include Canviz in your pages.
