build or tarball?

I usually prefer grabbing a stable tarball over rolling commits.
Are the "recent" commits considered stable? How do we get a "stable version that works with jquery"?
Is recipe for packaging up stuff from SVN for install into an app? Looks like the makefile is really for creating the examples.
