Our current Canvas development environment runs on a Amazon EC2 is a single high-CPU medium instance.

What is the best strategy as the system grows to hundreds of synchronous users and thousands of asynchronous users? Possibilities I've considered:
  1. single c1.medium --> two c1.medium app servers + c1.medium MySQL
  2. single c1.medium --> two c1.medium app servers + Amazon RDS
  3. single c1.medium --> single m1.large --> two m1.large app servers + m1.large MySQL
  4. single c1.medium --> single m1.large --> two m1.large app servers + Amazon RDS
Is my next step to scale up or out? Is RDS worth investigating?

Did you ever end up scaling? It would be great if you could share your experience if you did.
