Production Start says:
Starting July 14, 2018, the stable branch of canvas-lms will require this service to be running and configured for full rich content editing functionality.
I last pulled on July 19th, and it seems to me the wysiwyg editor works okay - I can insert equations in assignments and such. Is Production Start wrong?

Yes and no, as I have found out. The RCE sidebar enhancements require a separate service to be running that is not included in Canvas Core.
As far as the docs say https://github.com/instructure/canvas-rce-api is the service that needs to be running. I have not figured out how to get this thing to be stable, the lack of releases makes this insanely difficult to rely upon.
