Hi,

Is there any page where we can compare the differences between the cloud and open source versions ?

We have installed the open source version and we need to make the syllabus of courses public. In our version, we can only make the whole course public. However, the screens shown in the guides, present the additional option of making the syllabus public.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Maria,
There is a description of the differences here: https://github.com/instructure/canvas-lms/wiki/FAQ

The option to make a syllabus public is a brand new feature, released Monday to open source users: http://help.instructure.com/entries/21527885-04-20-13-Canvas-Production-Release-Notes-Featuring-Admin-Tools-and-Advanced-Math-Formatting

You will need to update to the most recent version to use this feature.

Hello Canvas community,

Following this discussion, I have a few questions regarding the open-source vs Cloud version of Canvas.

It appears that the following items are closed source :

  • Multi-tenancy extensions
  • Analytics
  • Mobile integration
  • Proprietary SIS integrations
  • Migration tools for commercial LMSs
  • Other minor customizations that only apply to our hosted environment
  • Chat Tool
  • Attendance Tool (Roll Call)
Does Canvas plan to stick to this and keep closed source features such as Analytics and Chat tool or is there any plan to open source them ? I guess those features are not the most important reason for users to opt for the hosted version so I don't fully understand Canvas strategy. If someone could shed some light, it'd be great !

Thanks and happy new year to you all !

Instructure announced at last June's InstructureCon that they intended to open-source the Chat tool. We're hoping for that ourselves, as we run the open-source version in-house and Chat could be a very useful add-on.

Instructure also announced plans to open-source the analytics tool at InstructureCon 2012 :)

So this would mean they haven't done it yet because it's still not "ready" (i.e. clean enough) ?

Anyway, I hope someone from Instructure could confirm these answers :)

Have a nice day,

There are lot more than just technical hurdles as Instructure got multiple rounds of VC funding and they got around $40M (http://www.crunchbase.com/company/instructure).  Instructure team is great in providing the base LMS source as open source and Canvas LMS is one of best LMS even with out these closed source components.

Mani
