I'm evaluating Canvas cost free LMS as an option to an existing company develop (basic) training website. From community/user experience, how easy is it to implement the cost free version of Canvas? Does someone have an implementation plan as I know suppotr is not available for the cost free version. Also, does someone have a link to the list of feature/capabilities for the cost free version of Canvas?
Looking to avoid a lengthy implementation/transition, costs and prove an alternative to our home grown web training site.

Thanks.

You can start by looking at their differences:

https://github.com/instructure/canvas-lms/wiki/FAQ#are-there-any-code-differences-between-the-open-source-and-hosted-offerings

Are there any code differences between the open source and hosted offerings?

Yes, there are some. Canvas runs on the exact same code as we release to github, and as of this writing the code that we deploy to our production environment is pushed the same day to github. However, there are a few plugins and extensions that we provide for customers that we don't open source right now. These include:

  • Multi-tenancy extensions
  • Mobile integration
  • Proprietary SIS integrations
  • Migration tools for commercial LMSs
  • Other minor customizations that only apply to our hosted environment
  • Chat tool
  • Attendance tool (Roll Call)
  • SCORM import tool
  • Catalog

In addition to the list that Nick posted below, you'll want to read through the Production Start guide a couple of times (NOT the Quick Start guide). You'll have to make adjustments to the guide as appropriate for your environment. It assumes that you'll be running everything on one server, which isn't a good practice for a proper production environment; you want a separation of concerns for your database, application, and possibly delayed jobs servers).

I'd caution against thinking of this as "cost-free Canvas". While the software is free, you're still going to need infrastructure resources (not free) and your time (probably not free).

How big of a deployment are you envisioning (number of courses, number of users)?
