Hi I have a tyne canvas canoe the sprint double, last year i was given a granta silver airflow from the 50s. It seems complete but the canvas is just about beyond all help. It does however have all the sailing bits, i was thinking i could use these, and have a really universal canoe. The granta has a pair of leeboards with all the fittings, once fixed across canoe they are sprung ready to be lifted a few clicks at a time a clever design from the 50s. It also has a mast and mast step plus which looks like the original sail and spar, not sure what rig it is. All the canoes i see on the net seem to have outriggers, i definately am not fitting these. Can i enjoy sailing just with the twin leeboards, granta obviously thought so. Is there anybody on here who sails with this outfit. I think with a bit of thought i could fit all the bits to the tyne. I live right on the coast, so could sail weather permitting at a moments notice, would make a change from just paddleing. Would like any input on any of the above. regards Tony

Tony, did you get any replies? Any chance you could take a photo or two of your sail rig? I'd like to try to duplicate it, or find something similar. Anyone able to offer help on this?    Cheers, KL

Dear Anthony,
I too have a Tyne double sailing kayak. At least I think that it is a Tyne. It is in two Tyne bags but does not have the Tyne logo on the deck. The hull is perishing and I I am carrying out experiments to ascertain the most suitable treatment to re-proof the canvas if possible. Today i applied a coat of Flexithane hypalon paint to a 600mm square of canvas. On drying I held it up to an anglepoise lamp which revealed much porostity. The low viscosity meant that it did not close the holes in the canvas. I shall try more products. I have replied to another tyne user on Song Of The Paddle as well.  There are folk there also wrestling with this problem. As to the sailing rig I too am trying to fathom how to use this. i have rigged the sail up whilst dry assembling the kayak in order to assess it. The boom was missing a sheet rope but one could easily be tied on. There is a photograph of a PBK20 under sail on the Tayside Sea Kayak Club website. I have contacted the membership secretary asking if the member in question could be identified and would be willing to contact me. I await a reply. in the meantime it would seem that the sailor / kayaker in question is simply holding the sheet (rope) in hand as one would when dinghy sailing and not as the hands free modern kayak sails. have invested in a second hand copy of Percy Blandford's book 'Boat Building' which I believe contains details of the sailing rig and so I may be more enlightening once this has arrived. I notice that on the PBK18 the rig is different with the mast stayed from anchors at the stem and gunwales. The Tyne's mast simply steps into the hull but is quite short so i do not think that there is too much risk of being dismasted.
Elsewhere there is a site dedicated to sailing kayaks. (Until a few weeks ago I had not even heard of sailing kayaks) Some have outriggers and some do not. They are not obligatory. Mine has skegs although with all the aquadynamics of a bread board these are components that I will feel no compunction in replacing. I understand that even skegs are not essential as those who sail kayaks (not me yet ( I can hardly wait))  do not feel that they are essential especially if one is sailing a non folding kayak with strakes.
I trust that this is of some use and I shall inform you further when  I know more.
Regards,
Malcolm

Dear Anthony,
I also have a question. Supplied loose with my Tyne were two aluminium hook cum bracket affairs with a dovetail attachment. I have seen three of these on the gunwales of a dilapidated PBK18. Would you know what their intended function is?

Regards,
Malcolm
