HELP! Canvas Newbie!

I have recently been given this wonderful canvas canoe. The paint on the canvas looks a bit craked and has not been re-done for at least ten years. I wonder if anyone could help me: Should I paint it? Should I strip off old paint in any way? Paint with what? Any suggestions?

Am thinking of cleaning - roughing with light sandpaper and buying the rubberiest paint I can find.
