Good morning!  i am looking at the 14.5 PBK shown on the ClarkeCraft catalog.  That's the one with the bent frames.  Has anyone here built that one?   Thanks!!

MadMike, thank you for your speedy response.  Can I pick your brain a little?  How are the bent frame shapes established?  I.e., are they formed over shaped molds, or are they bent into the previously installed stringers?  Would this design work with the now-common one piece sewn on covering?  Or, must it be covered top and bottom and tacked at the gunwales?  I have been looking at the new ( and very old) lashed joints in lieu of screws, epoxy, etc and think I"d like to go that way.  Do you see any problems with this?  This would not be a first-build for me.  I have built a number of stitch-and-glue yaks, plus 4-5 pirogues and several row boats and dinghies.  I really want to build a SOF now, just to sort of round out the experiences.  Thanks!!   Keith

Hi Keith..I would brass screw the gunwales and the frames..i would use 18mm bs 1088 plywood from frames this gives you a good width for screwing into the end grain of the plywood, on my canoe i put small doubling  pieces ,on the frames this made it very secure.. i have only used copper tacks, the only problem with lashings, they will not sit flat, when you put rubbing strakes on.

the good thing about fitting the deck canvas on last if you have  any damage to timber  you can remove the deck canvas and get at everything.

  1. Bent frames are of ash,and they should be flexiable enough to just set them in when you have the rigid frames in place
  2. kind regards Mike

Thanks Mike.  It looks like that frame has lived through a lot of dampness.  With some TLC it could live a long time yet.  .

As i turns out, i purchased the PBK-10 plans and began work soon after.  I just wanted a smallish "day boat" that i could throw on the car and go paddle for an hour when i wanted to.   I bought 1/2 sheet of  1/2" plywood for the sawn frames and a really nice 14-foot construction grade 2 x 4 to rip into stringers.  Someone in the grading department screwed up on that one, as it was nearly perfect.  I had another 2 x 4 which i ripped into gunwales and scarf jointed them near the middle.  So far, I have three of six stringers tied in. ( one more than shown here )   Great fun, at least so far.
