Hi:
Brad and I have been thinking how cool it would be if we can start our
very own eBook Reading Club! The rules are simple. We will all read
the same public domain eBook on our own device. We'll set a finish
date when we can start to pose here our comments, questions, likes,
and dislikes about the book. It works like a conventional book group,
except we are reading from our computers or eReaders, and we exchange
our comments via this forum.

To mark the 150th year anniversary of the Civil War, I thought we
might read a book related to this milestone in America's history.
Project Gutenberg has several very suitable choices. Let us know how
you feel about this idea.

would you believe.....
2 of our grandchildren are home schooled and the last 3 books
we read were on the civil war.
so I would be very interested.

With your vote of interest, we are ready to launch the eBook Club with a few  guidelines.  We plan to finish reading a book in every 4-6 weeks, depending on the length of the book. Title selections can come from any member’s recommendation. If there is more than one title, we’ll take a vote.  In the week following the end of the reading period, members can share their comments online.

Brad and I have selected Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage for May. This title, first appeared in serial form and later as a book in 1895, has been touted as one of the best stories written on the American Civil War. Most of us have probably read it when in school. I certainly did, and at the time, had no idea what it was all about. I was hoping that reading it again would lend me some new appreciation. Hope you’ll feel the same.

Timetable for The Red Badge of Courage:

Finish reading by June 8 (4 weeks from today)

Online discussion June 8 - June 15 (1 week from end of reading)

Next title nomination (any time prior to June 15)

Downloading:

Go directly to Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.org, search and download the ePub version,
or go to CPL’s eBook site: http://ebooks.metronet.lib.mi, click on the Project Gutenberg icon on the lower left corner to proceed to download.

Hello, Canton eBook Reading Club:
I hope you all had a chance to finish The Red Badge of Courage. I downloaded the title from Project Gutenberg on the iPad, and  also made use of the notes and bookmarks features of the device. I exported my notes to my email. Pretty neat! I would love to print out the pages that I bookmarked, but I couldn't seem to find out how to do that.
Reading the book now was definitely a better experience than when I last did in my teenage years.  I found the book more a psychological fiction than historical.
The war skimishes seem to be universal in nature. Tthe characters, perhaps other than Henry, are more spoke pieces than full-fledged people. Crane didn't even give most of them names.

Hi
yes I started it but in the mean time my husbands brother was put in hospital and not hospice.
So our lives are put on hold.
I also notice that the only name given was Henry.  He seems like such a young man and I will have to read more to find out what is going to happen.
Even though I did not finish, I would love to see the remarks of the others who did.
