Well no-one else has replied, so I'll tell you what I know.

A couple of people were trying to drum up interest in a hackspace for
Canterbury. A few monthly meetings happened, but nothing ever came of
it. I think the largest problems are finding a venue where people can come
and go freely 24/7 and then money for rent etc.

I am still for the idea of a hackspace, but I think it would take a pretty
determined individual with some time and dedication to get this off the ground.
I am not willing to step up at this stage.

On the upside, a lot of new companies have moved in to Canterbury over the past
few months. Maybe these guys would fund/host such a faccility. Starting points
might be the following companies:

* Fruitworks
* Ion Cube
* Kempt
* Deeson
* Innovation centre

If you are willing to travel, you might try:
* London Hackspace
* Medway innovation centre -- Prototype
* CoFWD (shared work space, but might host one offs)

Hope that helps.

We tried running it as a monthly meetup until there was enough
interest to think about charging subscriptions to pay rent, etc. But
we were lucky if more than 2 people turned up so we stopped bothering.
The last meeting was December.

I'll be starting a degree at Kent in September and I plan to set up a
space in Canterbury. Obviously, any help, advice, contributions and
interest would be very welcome.

In the meantime, do come and visit us at Prototype :)

Yeh, exactly my point.

Anyway, Edmond, if you do decide to set one up be sure to let us know.

Cheers

I have decided, but I'm somewhat limited in what I can do at the moment as I live in Maidstone. Come September, though, I will be spending a lot more time in Canterbury and things should start moving. Out of interest, how far is the Innovation Centre from the various Unis?

It is right on Campus. You are probably in a good position to get something
rolling due to your involvement with prototype.

Oh wow! That's a massive plus point :)

And yes, I'm hoping that I'll be able to make good use of the lessons
learned at Prototype to get things off to a good start. I think
Canterbury will will prove to be an ideal location for a hackspace :)
