The main reason they're cheaper is they're manufactured either in china or in someone's shed. Quality is known to vary wildly in the cheaper alternatives. In my personal view you're better off buying to official one. Not only do you have someone to go back to if there's a problem with the board, you're supporting them directly. Third party manufacturers often pay nothing Arduino.

I sourced an arduino mega from eBay for about half the price of an official arduino. It was built to a very high standard and works perfectly.
Having said that your milage may vary. Because the hardware is open, anyone can build and sell them.
PS.
Make sure the item is in the UK when you order or it will take weeks to arrive.
